After a long time away, i'm playing JA2 UB again. Lost all my savegames in a hard disk wipeout!
Anyway, i'm at J13 and in the tin hut. Theres a switch which i assume allows the Door to open - otherwise I could not open the Door.
After a bit of mopping up the alarm goes off and no one is near enough to get to the fan.
My question is - Is the alarm set to go off at a certain time of Day and i was just there at the right time , or is it set to go off a number of moves after you arrive?
Last time i played i remember having to clear the area and use a LAW to stop the fan . Of course i would prefer a quieter way!

My bet goes to that it goes off after a few turns after you have engaged combat. Last time I actually made a bit of experimenting, it seemed like it had to do with the # of enemies killed in J13. Don't know for sure and my windows is down (can't find the installation cd either), so can't check.
A list so everyone could see my miserable state, sorry for the offtopic:
1. My computer's (well, technically it's my father's) hard disk died somehow. When starting, and it starts opening GRUB (OS loader) it suddenly gives 'Error 17'. Yeah, f*** you too.
2. Since I was the last one to see him (HD) alive, I got the blame.
3. While I was seeking a political asylum from my sister's place, my dad fixed the problem by re-installing Linux.
4. Can't find the Windows installation CD and daddy won't tell me the root password for linux so I could force the neighborhood nerd to install JA2 for linux. So, no Jagged Alliance for me, till I get the money scraped up to buy my own computer. [/offtopic] Pardon my inglese.

cantiSo not to be a pain and rehash a dead topic but.......I am playing UB for the first time and would also like to enter the tunnels without blowing up the fan. I have cleared the area and have been trying to find the right time by running the clock and then checking the area but that is taking forever. So if anyone has any new info it would be much appreciated. Thanks
i was always under the impression that the fan only stops once, this is during your combat on the map, and either you manage to run (sneak) through it in the few turns that it remains inactive or you have to blow it up. Never thought it'll stop a second time, but maybe it does. Anybody know (beyond mere guessing) ?

My personal experience was that after killing an ?? # of enemies, the alarm goes off and the fan shuts down.
I experimented this, with the help of my multiple saves.
*Tested and works.
*It helped me plan in advance, by placing my mercs/squadron by the building that's fight on front of the fan, and activating the alarm by killing the 2 ladies sniping form the window -I saved those 2 enemies for last in purpose, knowing I needed to kill 2 more to activate the alarm.
*I sent a second squadron to finish the job, by killing the remaining enemies at the plant
BTW, If you ignore the enemies in the buildings on the left-side, and only focus on the buildings that are closest to the fan, you will be able to make it stealthy-style inside the underground levels.
Again, I recommend to save often. I personally create/overwrite a "new" save after killing each enemy, so that you know when you killed amount of enemies that triggers the alarm.
PS. I still need to figure out the # of enemies that triggers the alarm. Perhaps a random number?
