I just downloaded this mod and followed all of the instructions found in the "download JA2 mods" heading relevant to Renegade Republic. It seems that everything is where it should be yet what I get is a standard 1.13 game no matter what exe I attempt to use. I thought that RR was supposed to have new maps, setting and load screens so what did I do wrong? Any suggestions are welcome.

It looks like the instructions in the "download JA2 mods" heading relevant to Renegade Republic are not exactly complete. What I did:
1) Fresh installed JA2 gold 2) installed 1.13 ( i used JA2 1.13 2975 exe SVN@1149) and everything worked fine 3) Extract Renegade Republic files to JA2 Root Folder (C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold) 4) Extract ALL in One files to Ja2 Root Folder (C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold) .
It seems you need to do something to the the "ini" which I guess means the ini editor but what exactly I am not sure of. A bit more detail would be nice for noobs like me.

One thing I have noticed is that the Renegade Republic file I down loaded is 342MB rather then the 220Mb as stated in the "download JA2 mods" heading relevant to Renegade Republic which makes me wonder if the info in the RR listing is out of date. As for trying other versions of 1.13 i've only got JA2 1.13 2975 exe SVN@1149 and JA2 1.13 2651exe SVN@1104 Full. Anyway, I am not really sure what exactly I am supposed to do with the ini editor so a bit more info would be nice. Someone may want to add the ini instructions to the RR info and say something about what versions of 1.13 work with it.
One last, I was prompted by both the RR main file and the patch to overwrite stuff and did so every opportunity. If that was the wrong way to do it i'd like to know.

O.K., I got 1.13, the 2085 version, did a clean install and discovered that nothing relating to RR showed up in the ini files pull down menu in the ini editor and once again what I end up with 1.13 rather then RR.
I suppose that RR may be a great mod but since I can't seem to install it after 4 tries it is simpley 342MB of wasted space on my HD. Well I guess it's time to move on to something else since I am out of ideas.

FlettnerI have some questions about configuring RR. The read me document says "Ja2options.ini:
Options file for ja2 RR, in order to avoid crashes, savegame corruption and broken quests, it is suggested not to alter any settings of this file that affect the game other than cosmeticly (primary example is the explosive_damage modifier. It is important not to change this value. Grenade damages can be tweaked through explosives.xml without breaking quests or causing other major problems)" Should I assume that I shouldn't alter anything in the various wordpad documents that are used to configure the game world in 1.13? Can the the resolution be changed?
Maybe Scorpion wanted to achieve very specific effects?
For example, if there's a NPC near an explosive device that is meant to /wound/ him, so that you are forced to get to the NPC fast to patch him up, then raising global explosive damage is a very bad idea because it would mean actually killing that NPC (which may break a quest, as mentioned).
So I'd say Scorpion wrote that for a reason. Of course, you can act against his advice, but then you may need to re-start your game if you later find out that you broke something...

FlettnerThanks for the help. That seemed to take care of it. Someone should change the the instructions for installing RR since they simply don't work as described.
yeah i had the same problems when i installed- the instructions should be more specific

I had this problem multiple times on multiple computers using multiple JA2 mods; basically, Vista not only objects to overwriting files, but especially if it's done through another program, sayyy extracting zips or rars over other files.
To anybody running Vista: make sure you have turned off your UAC (User Account Control). This can be done by running msconfig in the Start Menu's "Start Search" box, go over to to Tools tab, scroll down to "Disable UAC". Make sure you turn it back on when you're done... it may be annoying, but Vista is about as secure as a screen porch without it.
Edit: You even have to run as admin just to allow the game permission to use and alter mod files. Strange!
As always, thank you so much to all the devs and modders who keep this community alive. We can't do enough to repay you, and I salivate for every mod that supports 1.13, NIV, and all the wonderful strategic militia doodads. I've had some of the most challenging and rewarding gaming experiences thanks to you guys.
Effusively,
SkunkDave

SwampgatorFlettnerThanks for the help. That seemed to take care of it. Someone should change the the instructions for installing RR since they simply don't work as described.
yeah i had the same problems when i installed- the instructions should be more specific
I had the same issue, but now have the Eastern block troops at the Front end, so I am hoping all has been successful.
I think the main issue maybe the installation instructions, it's only slight error but makes a difference, or maybe I'm just a bit 'slow.'
The instructions say to extract all files into your parent JA2 folder, which I did first time round but didn't get the correct game, even when loading the 'ja2_RR_2322' exe (or the 'RR_ja2_2124'exe for that matter.)
What you should do is extract the whole RenegadeRepublic zip file elsewhere, which then leaves you with a folder called 'rr' then cut and paste all of the contents of this folder (sub folders included) over to your JA2 parent folder. I believe my first installation extracted all files, but not with the correct sub folder structure, which was why my game was just loading up some version of JA 1.13.
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues, and thanks Scorpion for what I'm sure will be a fun mod! :shake:

that "rr" folder you're referring to, it only exists in non-official (read: not made by me) uploads. So you have to be careful which instructions you use on which upload.
Somebody apparently decided to add an extra confusing step to the installing sheme and failed to appropriately document it. They certainly didn't do that on purpose to annoy potential players.
There should be no such issues with the official uploads. They're pretty much drag-n-drop, even more simple than a 1click install.
as a rule of thumb:
Ja2 folder/ here is your respective exe, ja2.ini, dll's. Ja2.ini must point to the custom data location data-renegade
data folder - data-1.13 folder - data-renegade folder. Here is the custom data, actually, all of it is in the data-renegade folder for simplicity reasons.
That's all there is. If you don't have a ja2.ini pointing to data-renegade, or if you don't have a data-renegade folder at the smae hierarchival level as data or data-1.13, there's been a mistake in the install.
In most cases this seems to be because of this strange "rr" subfolder. But even as people screw up their uploads of my mods, if you follow the rule of thumb (only true with RR, newer mods will use VFS) you can correct such screw-ups in an instant.

well, if you're lacking fmod.dll, then there's a much more basic mistake in your install than what's been discussed above.
Did you install 1.13 first or did you try to run RR based on vanilla ja2?

I think the smaller size of the "inofficial" downloads results from additional data compression. I can see that this confuses. Besides, the discusion about RR is in parts extremely old so these days it is hard to get access to this kind of information.
In theory, the version of 1.13 that you use as a base for RR matters little, as RR uses its own exe and its own data basicly leaving no room to variations inside 1.13's exe's or data. Of course, if you download very recent 1.13, you'll download a lot of stuff that won't be used by RR anyway, so, an older version might be better.
Of course, people that, unlike myself, have installed RR only recently or, that, unlike myself, know exactly what revision they have, may share their experience with you as to which version or revision worked best for them. This is an issue i can't give a good opinion about as "my" RR grew over the lifespan of countless 1.13 revisions

ja2 gold with 1.13 2085 and then RR sounds good. As long as you run the respective RR exe directly, it doesn't matter how the folder in which it resides is called.
Now RR doesn't come with desktop shortcuts, but if you make any of them to run the rr exe, it'll have to point to the correct folder.
