Hi JA Fans.
First of all, English is not my first language^^.
I have a major problem with JA1. I know that game, spent many hours on it. Good old times:)
Now I found my old JA1 CD Rom, installed it and wanted to play.
When I start the game I come to that "command center room" in the very beginning, where the laptop is and the game options and so on.
You cannot play without mercs and therefore you have to use the laptop. But everytime i do that (clicking the laptop), the game stucks. There is a blackscreen and nothing further happens. The blackscreen remains and thats it.
The Windows dosprompt doesn't work at all. There's nothing left of DOS after WIN98.
As far as I know, DosBox is the only way for a DOS game when you have WinXP.
I use the original configuration of DosBox. Also tried some setting variations, like cycletime, without sound, and these things.
But the problem is always the same.
I remembered that there was already a premade starting team on savefile 1. Loading this works, but I cannot do anything then. All items are invisible, Mr Lucas' video message is without text and starting the day anyways results in another blackscreen.
Fazit: I cannot play the game at all.
Its an original CD, no copy, and I think the CD is ok so far.
Is there some special small thing in DosBox that I don't find?
Maybe the error is not in the game or DosBox, but in Windows or whatever?
So, please, if anyone has a real idea about that, post it. I want to play again this old favourite of mine.

GurkeFirst of all, English is not my first language^^.
No problem, you are not alone
As for your problem... while i know for sure that there is no incompatibility (of any kind) between DOSBox - Win XP - the specific game (JA1), i'm not sure where the problem may be located (mainly because, unfortunatelly, i use JA1 no-CD version).
IIRC the CD version has more dialogue and, maybe, grafic and cutscenes. Probably this things are accessed via CD (they aren't installed in the HD) and you are experienciyng problems that my be related with CD access and the way in which DosBox handles Cd-rom. So the question is :
Have you mounted the CD so Dosbox will be able to read from it?
I means the command (lets say that your real CD drive is labeled as F):
-mount D F:\ -t cdrom [in which D is Dosbox virtual CD drive and F is the letter of your (real) CD drive]

Thank you, ShadowCaped!
Thats exactly what I forgot.
Mounting the cd works fine. Now I can go back to the roots, haha.
JA1 has a real nice atmosphere. Can't wait to waste another many hours there^^.
