Running XP SP3. Or is it 4? This is the vanilla version of UB, not the 1.13 version.

I've read that the terrible bug where the computer locks up on pressing "quit" has been fixed, and the download of UC I got claims to have incorporated that fix in the download. But the game has already locked up twice when I've tried to quit. This is especially undesireable, because I have to toggle the power to escape the lockup. Obviously, I can't play the game under these circumstances.

There appears to be no working link to the patch that corrects this. Can someone help me out?

Alt-x (The force quit shortcut of JA2, that usually works)?
Ctrl-Alt-Del? If this one does not bring up the task manager, or at least the screen where you can choose task manager, then yes, a hard reboot is probably the only way to quit it. As for this bug, haven't encountered it, so can't really comment.
2 little remarks as well
XP has gone up to SP3 as far as I know, and UC is a JA2 mod, not a UB one.

UB was a typo, I meant UC of course.

When the game freezes, ctl-alt-del doesn't bring up the task manager. It appears that the lockup makes the computer not receive any input, so probably alt-x won't work. Alt-tab certainly doesn't tab me out of the screen.

What a pain.

Just to clarify, did your information say this was fixed in original Jagged Alliance 2 v1.07 or earlier? Original Urban Chaos had a modified v1.07 exe, so unless you took care to not overwrite the exe, your UC install is using the v1.07 .exe (and not for instance v1.12 that is JA2 Gold's exe revision).

Is the UC exe 1.7? I ask because the 90120 code works in the IMP selection screen. I think the exe I used to overwrite was the 1.3 version. Anyway, here is the entire readme:

quote:
------------------------------------
JA2:UC Quick Fix 2 - 31.12.2003
------------------------------------

1. This fixes the QUIT button bug
2. Also fixes the black screen bug

...this version is already patched.

end quote.

The UC exe is dated 11/9/2003 and is 2.82 mb.

One possible work-around may be to save and then try alt-x. The lockup only occurs after the "quit" button is pressed.

Ok, by that quote, UC is definitely claiming to have fixed that bug. Which means either the fix is part of the v1.07 JA2.exe, or is not .exe related. Sorry, it has been some time since I looked at the original UC documentation.
