Some of the files that came with Jagged Alliance 1.12 were copied over to 1.13, without any alteration and are stored in SVN GameDir. However, not all are which leads to a major issue if you don't install 1.13 over existing JA2 installation, but just copy the SLF files, or just point to their location form the original JA2 in VFS.

The main issue is that the whole "tilecache" folder is missing which leads to crash on several occasion. First instance is when the helicopter flys to Omerta (screen)

The problem appears on every version I tried for several years. I made a bugzilla report on this over 1.5 years ago, but I guess nobody looks in there ^^.

The missing files are present on retail disk as well as Steam version, so I guess any other version (GOG) should have them too.

I think only missing tilecache folder is a trouble, but here's the list of all the missing files. Strikethrough files are already in 1.13 data. It's based on the clean Steam installation.
  • Mercedt\017.edt
  • Npc_Speech\097_054.wav
  • NpcData\H8.edt
  • NpcData\067.npc
  • NpcData\087.npc
  • NpcData\097.npc
  • NpcData\107.npc
  • NpcData\117.npc
  • NpcData\118.npc
  • NpcData\122.npc
  • NpcData\H8.npc
  • ShadeTables\RGBDist.dat
  • stsounds\BLAH.wav
  • stsounds\BLAH2.wav
  • Temp\files.dat
  • Temp\NpcQuote.tmp
  • whole tilecache\ folder (137 file)
  • tilesets\0\Highl3.sti
  • tilesets\33\P-furn3.jsd
  • tilesets\45\P-furn3.jsd
A whole pack of JA Gold 1.12 files from Steam
It seems that the two files in temp were modified after I started the game, judging from the modification time - creation time is ok - if it's a trouble, I can reinstall the game tomorrow and create a new pack.

I haven't compared the files byte-to-byte to see if the versions that are in GameData indeed matches with the versions installed by Steam, but I can if needed.

PS. Maybe some files listed above are obsolete, and are no longer needed for 1.13 and can be removed actually?

You are not supposed to use 1.13 without Ja2. This is by design and documented in the installation instructions.

But why? By copying the SLF files, or providing the location to it in VSF, I can easily keep multiple installations of JA2, including untouched Vanilla JA2 - and it's only a matter of copying a few files with the weight of just a few megabytes. Or is there some copyright issue? (I doubt, as you will still need SLF files to do anything)

You can easily keep multiple JA2 installations no matter what, I don't see the point.
Edit:
If there are indeed bit-identical copies in the GameDir, I'd vote for removing those to slim the download a bit ... not that it matters either way.

At least that would be a less confusing approach Smile. On the other hand keep in mind that not all retail versions come patched to 1.12 - for example there is no Gold Polish version of JA2 out of box. Maybe that's why some files are included? I also remeber always noticing the statement that there is no need to install 1.12 patch before applying 1.13. Unfortunately I don't have my old pre-gold version available right now to see the files included in here Sad

People should always patch Ja2 to the latest available version for their copy. As far as I know there is nothing higher than 1.05 for my retail German version of Ja2. This is what I installed and then 1.13 on top of it + custom map. Runs very well.

edit: Btw. the tilecache files in 1.13 GameDir are not in my original Ja2 tilecache directory. So they are probably necessary to keep.

Can't confirm that. All my installation are based on a 1.02 install, for example, with no negative results due to that. As I'm not even sure 1.01 and 1.02 patches are needed, we should only remove stuff that already exists in 1.00 imho.

Even better if 1.13 works fine without patching JA2 first.

It's just my usual procedure to patch a game to the latest version before using mods.

I wouldn't remove any files without testing the different versions of JA2 (also localized ones) and I doubt that anyone could do this test. Just don't add unnecessary files. The GameDir is already big enough (over 800MB).

That's why I proposed adding files instead of removing the files (it's less than 2MB anyway), so you don't have to worry abotu anything except the SLF files.

The GameDir is already big enough (over 800MB).

There's other way to make GameDir slimmer already - like removing 22.3 MB of outdated EXEs and 4.99 MB installer of LuaEdit that is available in newer version anyway, or Mercenary spredsheets in data files - and there's more things to clean should the need of space arise (plus GameDir folder could use some cleaning, especially the main folder is a bit cluttered - but that's the topic for another thread).
