As in the merc editor there is a feature called "bMainGunAttractiveness," I was thinking, why not have a feature "FAVOURITE WEAPON" or a feature "FAMILIAR WEAPONS"?
After all, we don't have any progress in the way a merc handles his weapons... so having one of these features I consider very interesting.
-FAVOURITE WEAPON: after a certain amount of hits/kills a merc is temporarily used to a weapon, but the weapon changes when he gets used to a different one... which will then become his favourite weapon... He will always have only one favourite weapon at most.
-FAMILIAR WEAPONS: whenever a merc makes a certain amount of hits/kills with a weapon, he will gain a(nother) familiar weapon... After a while he gets a set of weapons he is used to. The list of FAMILIAR weapons could be shown when browsing the dogtag.
Let's say that a merc who makes X hits or kills with a Glock 17 gets a small bonus for this weapon... Different categories could receive a different kind of small bonus. This way, the bonus for the category of SMGs could be focused on a different aspect than the bonus for the category of assault rifles. Boni should be very small though, but a weapon like an SMG could get a different value in the hands of a certain merc... I was thinking of boni like +1DMG, -1AP, +1RNG,...
A coloured outline of the weapon (similar to when you pick one up) could show that a merc is familiar with this weapon...
This feature would be completely loose from the existing traits etc.
A possible feature? Any interest?

Getting a bonus to a specific weapon (e.g. the Glock 17 in your holster) is impossible. Codewise, there is no difference between different Glock 17-objects, as there is no 'ID'.
Getting a bonus to, all weapons of a specific type (e.g. to all Glock 17s) is equally nightmarish, as you'd then have to store some sort of 'gun-experience' for each of the bazillion guns we have. Storing bazillion values for a bazillion of people is bad. Very bad. Especially bad as the number of guns can easily change - guns are defined in xmls which can be changed in an ongoing campaign. I wouldn't even know how to do this even if I wanted to.
Getting a bonus to all guns of a specific class (e.g. all handguns) would be possible. I did something similar with http://www.bears-pit.com/board/ubbthreads.php/topics/321684/Re_Features.html#Post321684. Just as you become a Khorne follower by going melee and severing the heads of fallen enemies, one could get better in 'handgun proficiency' by using handguns (or better, by hitting with them, as otherwise one could easily exploit this by going on the firing range). Codewise it is possible.
However, I think doing so would be a bad thing. This bonus to certain guntypes would effectively punish you whenever you use a different gun category. As a result, the optimal type of playing is to decide which gun you want to use lategame, and to then acquire that gun category as fast as possible, and never change it. I absolutely HATE it when games force you to do that. Might be different for people who don't care about optimizing their gear at all, but I absolutely loathe that.
Also, if everybody becomes good with the guns he uses... then what is the difference to today?

Alright. Thanks for the explanation, all of you. Another bad idea, I guess. Well, I try to contribute with ideas... Sometimes they aren't too good, but that's why I also ask for opinions...
@Depressivesbrot: didn't realise that it was an old idea... The caps are for making something stand out in the text... Okay, maybe these caps aren't necessary in the title, but well, I sometimes use 'em in titles. Must be my style... ^^
