As title says, I think it would be interesting if your character could learn a new trait / skill instead of being permanently locked.

It shouldnt be easy to do. They would need to train at a facility for a long time and somehow limit the amount of times it could be done so a whole squad couldnt acquire a trait.

For instance, the base at ALMA, you could spent $50,000 to acquire Auto Weapons / MG training. it would take 7 days to complete. You could learn demolitions at Grumm....Etc etc...

AND you should level up after the training to actually unlock the skill. Different skill-learning facilities might also have different minimum level and/or other stat minimums to be admitted.

But about whole idea, YES, I too always dreamed about, say, Grumpy who starts as is but eventually excels in heavy weapons and explosives at some point a month or two in the campaign.

I would envision something like this -minimum requisites to start training a trait. For example to start training for a marksman you need minimum 85 marksmanship. To start training as a machinegunner you need 80 marksmanship and 80 strength. And so on, and so on. You could retrain yourself, while keeping the trait limit. So going from marksman to heavy weapons, but not to bombardier, unless you lose another trait.
