On Experienced the counter attack size is 4 x 10 soldiers. You can modify the <CounterAttackGroupSize> in DifficultySettings.xml but that won't take effect if the groups have been created already.
If you can't handle this amount of soldiers you can always retreat or attack individual groups one by one.
