The previously underground single player release mod by the Scorpion FFF - Fight For Freedom has now been revised and updated for those wanting to play a WWII mod in Arulco.

FFF is based on an older 1.13 build, but uses it's own exe and features some unique features and runs quite differently from the JA2 we are accustomed to.

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/0a25/i89q3acqerj3d0uzg.jpg

Being based in the 40's, technology is very different and players will note armour is quite rudimentary compared to modern standards. This results in combat being quicker and more deadlier.

Previously FFF was focused as a multiplayer game in German. This is no longer the case. This is a single player campaign with unique maps, opponents, NPC's and RPC's speaking in English.

To play, all you need to do is grab a fresh vanilla JA2 installation (1.12) and then download the FFF SCI here;

http://www.mediafire.com/file/fa2ezbud16cacjy/FFF-1.13.exe/file

or alternatively it is now available at the Pit's Kermi mirror here;

https://storage.rcs-rds.ro/links/6fd6c939-da5a-450c-8d7e-b31597cee676

and overwrite your JA2 install.

Be aware this an early beta mod and still work in progress, but quite playable. Some limits are noticeable as FFF doesn't support NIV, NAS nor NCTH. A number of NPC's have no speech files and bugs are bound to appear, there is also some German language still present in the game from it's older build. This project needs support with testing and could be developed further if the interest is there.

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/76fb/r8kumqbgd188v7wzg.jpg

Take a look around, some of the UI has changed and you now work for the O.S.S. which uses data differently to AIM or MERC and due to some of the visual changes attempting to reflect its period era some buttons have changed. Namely the X button to close windows, you can either use the Esc button or click on the turn page graphic.

Sounds great! Just checking but you mean a fresh JA2 1.12 install right? Or should I install some form of 1.13 first?

I'll add some more questions via an edit.

Is there any way to bypass the new game video? It's been ages since I have played without the ini.editor front end and I'm not seeing a file that I can edit to skip it. Currently the game starts but the video loops and using either a mouse click or escape leaves the video frozen on screen while the game starts in the background.

That was using the JA2_5472_npcfix.DE. Using JA2_5465.npc-attachments-fix leads to a black screen and a loop of intro music.

Now I have it working with the 5465 file but I'm going to have to re-learn how to make JA2 work well with modern systems. I have the slow bullets and lagging controls that I've seen (and solved) before.

Yes, clean Vanilla install = 1.12. No need to add 1.13 files as they come with the SCI all built in.

I don't know about the intro, possibly disable it in the ini, if it's there.

This mod seems to run a lot faster on my machine compared to 1.13, but you are probably running on a newer system than me.

It's not clear I'm running a newer system than you; Surface Pro 3 from 2014. Its giving the same symptoms I had last time I reinstalled JA2 (a year and a half ago I think). Annoying but I know I've solved it before.

I did play long enough to see that many of the mercs got changed. It looks like the IMPs are going to be worse than even the starting mercs now.

Since it probably uses Win 10 or Win 8, you need to apply registry patch or DLL fix for the game to work correctly.
To disable intro, set PLAY_INTRO = 0 in Ja2.ini, you don't need INI Editor for that, just use notepad.

Running nicely now except that it crashes with a run time error in the first sector when talking to Carla.

Also, Buns has some ammo with an image of NADA in her initial inventory. I haven't tried hiring her to see what happens with it. Some of the other mercs have odd loadouts but that is the only one that seems broken.

What are you running it on? If Windows 10 or even Windows 8, follow Seven's suggestions above or any other optimization tips elsewhere on the boards.

I run it on Win 10, on a laptop that prefers 1366x768 resolution (cannot set that). I had already applied the dlls and performance fix, before asking. It still doesn't want to move...
1st of april release of 1.13 runs fine, but this...it sucks bigtime.

This may be because of highspeed timer issues. You can try to set HIGHSPEED_TIMER = FALSE in ja2.ini
Unfortunately, timer fixes from The_Bob appeared only in 8xxx revisions.

I don't think there's even that option with FFF, but it is running on an old 1.13 as a base. The game is not running fast forward like you can on some 1.13 with enemy turns running fast, rather on my system everything appears to run super responsively, every click the response is immediate, perhaps newer versions of 1.13 have the slightest lag, but only noticeable compared to FFF. I know that won't make Az feel any better mind you.

Message from the Scorpion today;

Performance issues with FFF: what I always do when running new ja2 exe's on my win 10 is to run them as Administrator and in compatibility mode to win xp sp2. also limited Colours (16 bit i think) but that may be because i play windowed mode. But These options solved the massive lag issue i had with 'Arulco vacations' for instance.

When opening the sector-inventory after a battle, the game freezes sometimes. In the cases where I managed to close the inevntory, parts of the graphics for it where still shown.

I haven't come very far yet, but it's rather challenging. The lack of decent protective gear is causing me to look for cover constantly happy

I'm allready impressed by the floating grass and spreading fire. Gonna watch out for other eye candies, a look at the tilesets allready gave me glimpse on what may can be seen.

Is there any plan to adapt this to 7609? Or isn't this possible because the exe used is changed too much to justify the effort? 7609 should have less bugs coming with it.
My guess is, the sector-inventory freezes I faced would be such a case.

Performance is just fine for me, pretty much like you, it rather feels smoother and fast responding. But I'm running it on a win7, to be fair.

In general, it's fun to play and I'm happy you revived FFF.

I do like the different era flavour which we've tried to push further in tone in this build and there's plenty of unique additions that keep the interest up, that's for exmaple why I tried to pass off the laptop as an analog desk and filing system, but some features are often a compromise.

As far as I can tell with discussions with The Scorpion it's highly unlikely it will get a 7609 or newer build update, at least from Scorpion himself, but you never know. He is rather enjoying a new lease of life with the Deidranna Side Mod but he usually passes on blessings those interested in improving or sharing his teams work.

FFF single player had a bit of a troubled development and sat around in a half-played state for years, so it was picked up, revised and translated to get it back out there. It was a hope that if this English single player version of FFF garnered more interest then there may be more of an inclination to develop it further. One obstacle is FFF's unique features and code limits how it can be updated and this may require help or guidance from the original team that worked on it.

Not sure why those image links aren't working.

I passed it by Scorpion and he said;

'Mss32.dll related error messages used to mean we were using the wrong .Exe back in the day.
Not sure what it means nowadays, haven't seen that in ages.

I never used a gog version of the game. So no clue if that's relevant.
I would suggest to reinstall and try again.'

That reads as if part if the install is missing. So it appears likely that the game might not be fully functional just with that tweak.

I had windows complaining about unknown exe (why isn't it a zip?). I ignored the warning, extracted the files. Put the extracted files over original JA2 (tried JA2 english from Steam and JA2 german from CD) and both exe are working for me.

For the sake of testing, I redownloaded it again today. Did the same as above. Still working for me. Got it running on Win10 and Win7.

No problems with Intro or vfs on my side.

The GUI is tricky, took me a while to adjust, otherwise it's fun. Haven't finished it yet, it's a tough nut to crack (got my landing squad wiped out several times, lol).

Maybe something went wrong with your download? Dunno.

Hey Luk3Z, I don't think the mulitplayer system works for this version of the mod, however the original release of FFF was designed with multiplayer in mind, so if you can find that version that might be the one to use.

--

When starting new game, FFF-1.13 will try to play two Intro-files

The second one can cause a blackscreen

Both of those video-files use rather old formats: .smk and .bik

And while .bik might be supported by newer OS-Systems, it's rather unlikely for .smk

The first video-file used is in .bik-format and that one usually plays

The second one is in .smk and often causes blackscreen

Toggle Possible Solutions
--
Tested this with version of FFF-1.13 I downloaded at Bear'sPit Forum in March 21, if it ever gets updated this solution may becomes obsolete

Also:

The interface is a little tricky. sometimes you have to fumble around a little to find the exact spot to close a window, etc)
Sometimes it's hard to see, like the "shut down" at the cigarettes (to get to overview)

It did run on Win10 with both, english JA2 version from Steam and german JA2 version from CD

The original FFF was a german mod, that's why the texts in Intro are german, game itself will be english

Use "ja2_5465_npc+attachment-fix - Hex_2.exe" with english JA2

and "JA2_5472_npcfix_DE.exe" with german JA2 (game UI in geman)

It's a rather challenging mod, I got wiped out quite a few times (haven't completed it yet).

If the interface is trying you can close down windows by just hitting the escape key also.

As mentioned the original FFF (multiplayer) game was German but this is considered a full English translation, however some German stubbornly remained in some parts.
