....leaving aside the "special" weapons like the Stoner, the M1919 .30 cal, and the silent sniper rifle, what do you think are the best weapons in each category.

1) Pistols
a) Python - Most damage. Only pistol that can take a scope.
b) Skorpion - burst capable. Can have AP ammo. Can use laser sight (or whatever that stock thing is called).
c) Makarov - very low APs to fire (3)

2) Submachine Guns
a) MAT 49 - can use captured ammo/laser sight
b) "swedish K" - low APs
(Some other guns have good stats but were unable to mount silencers eg. M3)

3) Assault Rifle
a) Chicom 56 - low APs, can use laser sight
b) M16A - can use grenade launcher

4) Sniper rifle
Dragunov - most damage, all attachments

5) Light Machine Gun
RPK - can use laser and scope
Bren - better stats than RPK but cannot use scope

In general, I find that many US weapons have better stats, but cannot compete with VC weapons that are outfitted with the stock shock absorber thing that is essentially a laser sight.

In addition, high ammo consuming weapons like SMGs should be VC since otherwise supply becomes a problem.

I use CAR-15s and some M16A1s and two of those sniper rifles with 7AP per shot (can`t remember the name right now]. I don`t have the patch though, so this info may be outdated.

I don't mind a pair of high AP/Damage Pythons for TEX, silenced of course.

My custom 2xnight-ops geezer has the MAT49 as soon as I can tool it up with scopes and stuff. Spooky taught me a valuable lesson

Prefer the Chateraut(sic) over the M60 for scavenging ammo I suppose.

Grands are ok, the only weapon I'm getting head pops with at the moment Wink

Until I get m16's I'll use the Car15's with barrel extenders and launchers as a grenade exactly where I need it is vital sometimes. (Noticed how Teargas doesnt seem very effective?)

Don't like Dagunovs, prefer that FRF that fires french ammo, but I don't like sniper rifles much anyway unless I get Reaper.

First weapon to get a rod/spring is Spooky's GUSTAV, followed by an M12 shotgun for two shots per turn. I just love shotguns tho so thats personal preference there.

Well, I would agree with you that the french LMG is better than the M60, but I still wouldn't use a rod&spring on one.

I would go with the M105 Howitzer. I know you only get as many shots as you have 'Arty Req's, but hell, what other weapon has that kind of power in Vietnam SOG?

I would probably pick the M16A1 for small arms, but as it isn't in the game, I'll stick with the tried and true Druganov. I'd go for the M14, but that is unrealistically unreliable. (Perhaps it was useless in autofire, but it was far more accurate than the M16, A1, or A2.) The M2 Carbine and the .357 are the best bang for their weight and reliablity factors.

1. M-60
2. FRF-1 (a better use for the ammo than the Chatterault, in my opinion)
3. silenced Swedish K

I am still in my first game and have cleared the Am Loc area.

But so far my favorite guns are (with rod and springs of course):
1) The RPK which can use a scope and rebuffer. For some reason it performs better than the US/Nato LMGs. I have Stogie fire bursts and he is getting four hits, where with the other LMGs he gets only two hits per burst.

2) The Swedish K with silencer and barrel extender. Great for your scouts. Can get three bursts per turn.

3) I tend the prefer using one or two sniper rifles with my squads, so I go with a Dragunov or the Nato L42A1 (less APs the the Dragunov).

I am also trying the X-bow with some success. My IMP merc is getting a lot of one shot head kills with it.
