Hello,
SOG69 is fun so far: large, balanced, interesting. Of course, problems exist with sector N-9 (get the cheat program and just teleport around it, if you don't want to resart completely from expert to experienced) and with severe ammo mismatches.

My question concerns something more fundamental (perhaps I missed this somewhere): where can you acquire money, lots of money? Betty isn't worth dirt, and you don't find much lying around. It has, so far, become impossible to recruit the high-end mercs after hiting a few low end standbys.
Shadow is $20.5 (out of $30/35 starting). It would be nice to get some of the old team members from JA2. O.K., O.K., the crux: where is/is there an arms merchant? I suppose that the cheat program will let me recruit who I want, but is the mod supposed to be this way? Several cheap ones v. 1-2 elites? The new RPCs sre nice, but I am supposed to go in with a team already set. Seems a bit...rough.

Keep looking! I'm just about fininshed the Iron Triangle AO and have spent about $12K on additional mercs. Still have a balance of almost $20K. Granted you won't find more than $4K max at any one time, but the cash is there. However, don't plan on buying Shadow right away !!!

If things are that dire, use GABBI and press + at the laptop.

Just use the editor and change the one offending number. I'd have thought that would be more intuitive than cheating..

But not too many? Wink

No arms dealer in this campaign, of course. But any cheap merc can become a full-fledged high-level killer by doing the jungle run in the iron triangle. Actually I found Spooky almost too good, he'd have at least a $20k starting salary with AIM.

Try a challenge..get guys such as Trevor, MD or Gumpy who are level one but have High wisdom. Buld them up real good through the game through a combi of battles, training and more battles. My personal favourite in JA and JA2DL was Gumpy, but personally I would like to change his specialities (electronics..dud..imagine that in the Vietnam mod) to something more applicable to combat. Then he'll be a great merc. My current Fave is MD, cos he has knifing and the K-bars in the game are wicked, dude!

I picked up alot of extra items like camo kits, armour, first aid kits and other non weapon items and sold them to betty. Before I knew it i had a couple extra thousand dollars. A bit time consuming but i have 12 mercs in my sqauds now.

Hello,
I had tried to lower the number of enemies through the editor, but SOG69 still wasn't happy, so I decided, hey, forget this, and completely avoided the issue via the cheater. Actually, the cheat teleport is not unrealistic (as in JA1, JA2, JA2UB,...), because it would represent helicopter transport - something not unheard of during the Vietnam War.

Altogether too much like real life, money remains an issue.

Well, I figure that JA2 is the perfect place to take someone (I do this even with Flo) and build them up, work with them, and try to make them into superstars. I assure you that the off-of-the-shelf team of Gus, Magic, Reaper, Scope, Shadow, and Scully are no natch for my Meduna-ready team of custom, Fox, Malice, Wolf, Thor, Stephen, and, well, Shadow. A mod like SOG69 should, I think, be about sending your choosen into a great adventure.

- Twilight  CAN'T WAIT FOR URBAN CHAOS!!!

definitely keep Gumpy when you like him. Electronics skill comes into play with all high-level locks and traps, and there are a few of them in V69.

And, here's how to pick high-level traps with a low-level merc without being blown up: Make both the lockpicker and your highest level merc stand next to each other, over the item in question. Then the experienced guy (Sarge..) can detect the trap, and the lockpicker will know it's there and can start to defuse it Wink

I picked up $10,000 on the night after the initial helicopter crash.

So there may be stashes here and there throughout the game?

But it's risky searching with the boobytraps and mines! Naturally-it's simulating Vietnam!

Just stumbled over the $10,000, pure dumb luck.

Those bucks shouldn't be there, but well done! Smile I think Jay said that those money stashes were leftovers from his map-conversions, but you can't see them in the editor. We tried to find all of them during the playtesting phase, and they should be well buried normally.

Not so sure this isn't supposed to be there, unable to pick it up until after I'd cleared the sector-believe me I tried a snatch and run, but couldn't snatch! Wanted to clear the sector after I'd gotten the extra troops with some experience.

Haven't checked the editor.

There's another $4000 in another sector in a rubbish pile that I can't get to , it may be a left over. Thinking about using TNT to blast a path...?

Does that work??? Smile

Yes blasting the rubble works! I tossed a Molotov at the rubble and walked away $4000 richer.

Why do you want arm dealers? There are tons of both weapons and ammo (and other stuff as well) at any US base, so if you can arm for free, why do you want to buy it?

Two reasons for arms dealers.

1. Income to get better mercs.
2. Roleplay

1. I would like to be able to trade in crappy weapons for either better weapons or to get cash to hire better/more mercs.

2. Seems like mercenaries would do. Also support local merchants. Same reason I buy junk and destroy it from Betty. To get money into the system. Roleplaying like bandaging militia and civilians. Dropping off bags of rice to villages. Other kinds of hearts and minds operations.

Anyway my $.02 worth. :saint:

Hello,
right on, Dr. J! We could have had a U.S. Army supplymaster acting as an armsdealer. Just would have put a more interesting spin on things. Most of the ammo should be available for free, but other stuff, and income for a few more JA2UB mercs....

PS: to Twilight--

Don't hire Shadow right away-- he's too expensive. As much as I like him, one of the new recruits (Spooky) doesn't like him, very unfortunately (Shadow and Spooky would've made a great camo jungle team, too).

You probably realized this by now.
