You only need one STI. It can store many pictures. You can make it picture by picture, each having one more coloured dot than the previous. I.e. draw each state of the bar in separate picture.
Put them all into the STI, then simply call for the appropriate "frame" from the STI when displaying it.

You may make like 10 "dots", each represent'S 10% of max overheat or something. So when the weapon is heated up to over 30%, you display frame #3 where 3 of those coloured dots are. And voila... nothing incredibly complicated, but pleasant for the player's eye.

I was actually thinking of making it myself, since one of my planned project is interface tweaking (namely the weapon slot, attachment icons etc.)....
I thought maybe the heat bar could be placed under the weapon. Something like this:

Here is over 50% overheat displayed. The weapon slot has been enlarged in this pic. Maybe the heat bar is too thick, seeing it like this, it's rather flashy, as if it's the most important information the player needs. Could be made smaller. Anyway it's just for a rough idea.
