I thought maybe the heat bar could be placed under the weapon.
I disagree for the reason that I think heat is somewhat related to condition and therefore should be displayed in a similar way as the condition bar. The relation being that heat influences condition and both get changed on gun fire.
You are right on that point, that much is true. But. Condition bar full = good. Heat bar full = bad. They are not actually saying the same thing even that they relate. The player wants one to be high, the other to be low.
Another issue is space. In the UI slot, there is not much to the sides. A lot of rifles already struggle with having not enough space to fit in that slot, they are too long.

Well, it was just a very rough example I made in like a minute. I can drop more examples..

Dunno, how you see it, but I imagine the bar being left like that could also display number of grenades or ammo. For me, it seemingly doesn't matter here.

I would not advise to use blue colors - going from blue to red. When the bar starts to show, it already speaks of heat. Blue color fit more where we need to dispaly temperature under the normal value. But in our case, normal value = no heat bar showed.
