In my quest for more accurate baselines I will try to use real-world data to shape the in-game data.

For digestion rate, I used the stats of a 30yr old, 5'9" and 162lb man as our baseline (average height / weight of American males, I picked 30 because most mercs were not that young). Plugged the numbers into Wolfram-Alpha and got the following:

A BMR of 1719 kcal/day.
If I had a sedentary lifestyle it'd be 2063 kcal/day.
Lightly Active - 2364 kcal
Moderately Active - 2664 kcal
Very Active - 2965 kcal
Extra Active - 3266 kcal

By mapping the editable digestion modifiers (sleeping, traveling, assignments, in combat, etc.) to these lifestyles we are able to get an idea of how quickly we should burn up fuel.
Sleeping -> BMR (71.625 kcal/hour)
Vehicular Travel -> Sedentary (86 kcal/hour)
Assignments -> Lightly Active (98.5 kcal/hour)
On Duty (moving, opening, etc.) -> Mod. Active (111 kcal/hour)
Traveling on Foot (Jogging) -> Very Active (123.5 kcal/hour)
Combat -> Extra Active (136.1 kcal/hour)

Normalized to 1 for BMR, this gives us a ratio of 1 : 1.2 : 1.38 : 1.55 : 1.72 : 1.9. We now have our modifier numbers! Big caveat though - this only is accurate for food and not water levels.

But wait, how do we know how much we are actually digesting per hour? After some reading, I stumbled into this: The Fullness Factor (based on this), which measures how full food will make you. It would be a bit too complex to include this so I ignored it for now. I might include it later.

If we assume that 50% full is 3000 calories on top of your normal eating (i.e. eating a whole day's worth of food), we will get that 1% = 60 Calories (251kJ). Since 100 food points = 1%, this means each food point = 0.6 kcal / 2.5104 kJ. It also means that, in accordance with BMR above, we should be digesting food at a rate of 119.375 food points / hour. With this in mind we can now get a great idea of how good certain foods will be.

For example, a hamburger (let's say a big mac) would be changed from 95 to 983 food points (590 calories).

The only problem with this type of settings is that food becomes as important as water - you cannot skip out eating for too long because you digest food faster now. On the up-side, all those empty calorie foods are now much better at keeping you full Razz. What would be useful to know is at what point people autofeed (and if we can change this), and at what point you start accumulating penalties for food / water deprivation.

I will let you know how my Real-World Food experiment goes.

----------
Edit: There is another bug where mercs take stat damage even though they are full of water and food. Not sure what's causing it.
