There were two mercs, level 8 and 6.
I agree that having high level helps a lot, but in such situation - several mercs barricaded in room, pointing at doorway and ready to shoot like crazy at any 'bad guy' that will apear there, i want to be sure that enemy will have to go through the corpses of his dead teammates if he wants to kill my mercs.
So it's more about tactics than that "roleplaying" levels, i think.
