I've seen a TotalBiscuit review of it. Apparently the combat is fun. It sucks at management part, which is ultra dumbed down (aka setting up a speak-easy). I think it's worth it.

The TB "WTF is ..." video was from the game's release (almost a year ago). A more recent patch is supposed to have improved the AI a bit so the strategic part is a bit harder, but I'm not sure if it will be that much of a challenge.
As for its DLCs, there are 3 small ones (4, if you count the free one as well), which basically add one mission, unique gun and merc each. Mission difficulty is equivalent to late game ones, not sure if you think they are worth it. The Japanese Incentive seems to be a bigger expansion, but it's not yet discounted so I haven't tried it yet.

And in an unrelated note, you can get Omerta and the 3 small DLCs from GOG in a personalized box deal for $7.99, though it's obviously not a steam code.

Bought it too. Played all night. Kinda addictive, honestly. It's not as shallow as I expected but don't go too deep either. Definitely worth the 11 euro I payed.

Combat is, indeed, a pleasant surprise. I've I've had so far about 5 massive battles, like 4 versus 10-15 and I got my arse whooped so many times until I figured out a decent tactic that I started to love it. It's somehow reminescent of JA2, but with added skills.

I do recommend this game.

Nah, you'll be fine after the 10th wipe.

EDIT: Found a bug, btw. If one of you goons die on a mission, the game still offers a completely useless "break from prison" mission. Don't do it. It's pointless, he'll still be dead.

They actually die? I thought they were unconscious and the cops nabbed them, thus you could break them out of jail (assuming you can pull it off of course). Will have to check it again.

Buy a gun? There should be some rival bosses or sheriffs that you can buy weapons from, assuming you have a good enough standing with them. Also, the item your character starts with depends on your answers in the starting quiz.

Once you bribe a cop ($1000) or do business for a rival boss you can purchase a weapon from them. Then you go to team view and equip the new weapon. So far I've tested handguns (first long range weapon), revolvers (allows retaliation shots), shotgun (shoots everything in its cone, including friendly) and knife (pretty powerful, you can both AOE and throw it). And in about 4th mission I got a sniper dude with a true long range rifle that can actually do serious damage from range.

I like the fact that even basic revolver, when used well, it's pretty damn effective.

It compensates in character what it lacks in technology. You feel the same love/hate relation with your goons as you feel with your mercs in JA2.

And has some neat extra features JA2 lacks:

- automated cover (XCOM like)
- destructible environment
- a HQ (useless but still fun to upgrade)
- more effective weapon roles
- construction

If they had added just a bit more depth to the management part (atm is 1+1=2), then they would've had an epic game. The management is a bit like Tropico, fun but at shallow level. Oh well, can't have all.

It does have its shortcomings battle-wise too:

- has no interrupt/suppression so you can get rushed and swamped easy and often
- grenades are OP (yet you can run out of their range)
- AI is so scripted it screams (fixed spawns especially annoying)
- due to scripted AI all maps have predefined routes of attack
- enemies drop nothing (clearly a designed restriction)

But, all being said and done, it's still fun. I have yet to test the other modes of play and finish the campaign, hope things will only get better.

It does lack depth , interrupts would be/are essential for a better game !
A mix of this and 1.13 choices and the game would be a winner for sure . Back to Atlantic City Boss ! :redracer:

For all the good words I had about it, I hit such a frustrating snag I almost uninstalled it. In the Iowa Ave. mission, the last job puts your character alone vs 3 false cops and a hitman. Normally I would storm through that, but on this particular mission (it has a fail timer too), I feel like I am playing against loaded dice.

I've tried equipping my NPC with rare pistol (***), better tommy gun (**), sniper rifle (***). I even went and respecc'ed him to go all ranged bonuses. Yet the stupid cops manage each time to put 3-4 revolver shots in me, while almost dead. And my idiot gangster manages to miss like simple shots from 2 meters. I simply do not understand wtf is going on.

I tried this stupid fight about 15 times, with the same result. I've watched walkthroughs on the net, saw guys storm it with a handgun. I just don't get whats wrong here...

EDIT: Funny enough, I managed to do the mission using revolvers. And a roll of dice more decent, cause this time I didn't (somehow) alert all enemies at once.

It IS a wee bit frustrating being hit multiple times and missing with your own shots , combat could be better . Still worth the meagre money asked though .

True mate, for the few bucks I got plenty of kicks. It's been ages since I played a semi-decent gangster game. GTA killed them all.

As I said, there's always a way to win, you just gotta keep trying. Overall I enjoyed this as much or more than I enjoyed XCOM:EU and that was more expensive.

This has a "touch" of JA2 which XCOM lacks. They even put in a boxing match!
