Having trouble with installation. The zipped file I downloaded didn't seem to come with instructions or an installer. Been browsing up and down this forum looking for a post about it, but haven't found one yet. Did I maybe just get the wrong file?

The file I got more than 5 years ago was a self-extracting .exe file (I can view its contents with WinZip). It's about 20MB and includes 4 files: Setup.lst, setup.exe, Readme.txt, Ja2dl.cab. Readme.txt contains the following...
Quote:
Jagged Alliance 2 Deidranna Lives! Installation Instructions:

1. Run the JA2DL.exe program file and install the JA2DL Program.
2. Follow the "On Screen" instructions to properly install JA2DL.
3. When the program is installed, run JA2DL.
4. At the JA2DL Main Screen Select "Install JA2DL"
5. Follow the "On Screen" Instructions to install the support files.
6. Once the support files are installed, run JA2DL from the "Run JA2DL" Button.

And what I can do if I do not use any Windows. I use Linux and wine. I can not run this file (Component "XCEEDZIP.OCX" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file missing or invalid). I have same error in JA2DL2. I know I have this file, but this file is not registered. I run a lot op apps and games on wine, so wine is not issue here (I think).

My guess (from old memories) is that the file you mentioned is part of the fancy installer DL came with. Bad news is that its a Windows only app. Good news is that if you can get your hands on a Windows PC, you can install there and simply copy the files over to Linux (since the installer basically only places files where they need to be, doesnt affect gameplay).

That mod is a royal pain in the ass to install even on windows.

A better installation version should be done.

I would almost bet money that Batman would have no objection to making an easier to install version.

You got to consider DL was in the very early days of JA2 modding.

On the other hand, re-releasing DL it's under Batman's sole "jurisdiction", guess you need to ask him about it.

Your right.

The only way to do it would be to obtain Batman's permission but I am pretty sure that is one e-mail reply away from anyone who could make a self extracting file.

I have never done such a thing.

I think a good edition to this forum would be for someone who has done (even a simple one) to describe how you make a self extracting .rar or even better, 7zip file.

I've downloaded and installed JA2DL, but I am afraid its a bit more trickier than I remembered to make it run on Linux. There are a couple of steps involved.

JA2DL.exe unpacks the installer and registers some DLLs as logged in ST6UNST.LOG:
...
ACTION: RegKey: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion", "SharedDLLs"
...
ACTION: SharedFile: "C:\Windows\system32\XCEEDZIP.OCX"
(File was not found or was an older version -- new file copied)
...
ACTION: DllSelfRegister: "C:\Windows\system32\XCEEDZIP.OCX"

I assume here is where your installation breaks down. Problem is that xceed installer is later used in processing the rest of the files (which are sort of zip archives). And its hellish to unzip each by hand not knowing where each goes.

My best advice is to do this:
1. Get hold of a Windows PC
2. Install clean JA2
3. Use the normal way to install JA2DL
4. Archive the /JA2 folder and move it to your Linux box.
5. Pray it works.

Dont know if that would work, but its the best idea I have atm. Look up Batman's profile and send him an email using the forum, though, maybe he can explain it better.

Well if all that is necessary is a single click version of DL for installation would that necessarily need Batman's permission as you wouldn't be altering any content just making a new installer?

Just DO it , not as if copyright is being stolen ! All you are altering is the installing regime , not the game , IMO .

Someone needs to archive just the contents of the installer.... this is even more of a pain now that no one is running 32 bit windows.

Fortunately it works with VM of XP.

However the problem is now to use it with the 1.13 mod..... not impossible but a pain.
