Hi I recently bought JA 2 + JA 2 unfinished business from steam and although JA 2 seems to be saving OK the UB expansion well every time I try to save I get "Error saving game" I really like JA 2 and I am gutted about this, it wasnt until after I bought I noticed people have been asking for fixes for quite some time. I REALLY want working copies of JA 2+ JA 2 UB, I legally bought the game so I feel a tad annoyed that it isnt working, wouldnt have minded so much but it seems from what Ive read there has been no effort from the developers to make a fix, I have started a steam support ticket.

Im wandering if theres any unofficial patch that I can use thats know to work with the bad steam version and fix the save game issue?

Any feedback regarding any of this broadly or going into specifics is much needed and greatly appreciated should anyone find the time to reply.

(In case like myself people think this is old news and are thinking iof buying from steam well the current date is 21st May 2008 - If you have a steam version please put a ticket to steam because they are selling a product that isnt fit for purpose(If its the case theres a fix now I apologise, Im hoping there is but what Ive read makes me believe otherwise but would like some up to date info on potential fixes if possible)

Also add to that the steam servers just went down for my area 10 mins ago Sad I have bought heaps of steam but I think this will be my last purchase if this is how its going to be.

Hate to say it, but the Steam download is incredibly flawed.

From personal experience, I will never use the Steam system again. I had a lot of problems with installing Half-Life 2, and they gave me the run-around.

Can confirm that. You should consider yourself lucky regular JA2 works if you got it from Steam. Others weren't so fortunate. Don't know what they packed there, but they did an ugly mess.

How can you repair a messed up install? Well, there are 3 parts to your game that can cause massive problems:

1. The exe
2. The prof.dat (file that stores npc/rpc info)
3. The tilesets (some can be missing)

If it's a save problem, you can try replacing those (in that order). Or buy the whole thing again, on CDs this time.

Thanks all, will check all that out I think I am going to seek out a non steam version, I have bought lots of steam but lately with both steam and direct2drive I have noticed more and more limitations getting put on us people that are actually buying the products, it annoys me when Im guessing pirated versions dont have this sillyness. I also preordered spore and we are going to get screwed with limitations where that is concerned. I actually love my gaming and BUY anything from 1 to 3 games every few weeks but I am getting a bit sick of the way the industry is treating us and to be quite honest for all they bang on about using piracy as an excuse to fuel their greed well its not the first time people who pirate get the best deals because the big releasers are brilliant coders and fix alot of game stopping bugs. Really dissapointed whats happening right now in general not just regarding this game and as a person who spents an absolute fortune on games I am becomming less likely to buy products in future the more I read about various botched products and erosian of freedoms, backing users into a corner making them pay for demos which in the past were a means for developers to get their bugged crap tested for free.

Ok rant over Smile hehe , just annoying I am going to have to possibly bin a product I paid for. Either way really appreciate the help folks and I would say to any newbies who like me come here and realise they have been duped by steam to start a ticket there because its bordering on a scam in my view

Well since you paid for it I don't see how getting a pirate copy invalidates your payment Wink

I'll probably be slammed for this for some breach of a bullshit law or something, but I do believe that if the game doesn't work and you have paid for it you are entitled to a refund. If thats not gonna happen I don't see the problem at all with sourcing a working copy regardless of whether its the steam one or not. You paid for it and they have a duty of care to ensure it works (irrespective of whether they stick a disclaimer in their EULA as that is a breach of their own law anyway!).

Thanks Smile Appreciate your comment btw , I created a steam support ticket and made known that I knew about the fact this bug has been getting brought up by the community for a LONG time and they havent answered my ticket. Its frustrating in a way because on certain forums , you say theres something wrong with your purchased copy then you must be a pirate who buys nothing. As it stands I got a friends JA 2 gold disk and it works well know but kinda annoyed that the steam version doesnt work, add to that they havent conformed to any standard folder structure so Im thinking its going to be harder to use mods.

Im just lucky I have alot of geeky friends like myself lol who love their PCs hehe but not everyone will be in that position.

Believe it or not this is my first time ever playing ja 2 and man that game must have been so ahead of its time , I would happily buy multiple copies of JA 2 if thats what it took because its dam good. (Have been messing around with the source code on the forums and have been learning heaps, fact is though I would have been lost without these forums, its great you are all still playing a game thats quite old and its alive and kicking! I actually have a semi high end PC and really aint enjoying the current games on the market so am playing older games where gameplay was paramount, as an owner of a decent PC and I say this to anyone thinking of upgrading.........graphics are over-rated) Actually the only game Im looking forward to which I have pre-ordered btw is spore but they were thinking of having it so you have to re activate every 10 days which has taken all the good out it because I may not always be on the web, I do hear they have ammended it and are trying to make out that wasnt there intention because of a community backlash but if you look way back that was what they intended

Aside from all that things are all good now , just had to live with the fact I have a defective steam product , its putting me off digital purchase all together because I remember I bought Parkan 2 of gamers gate and it blue screened because it had a conflict with HD Audio so it was un-playable, I emailed support and they wouldnt give a refund, also the english site well all the patch forum and support links are dead or they were the last time I checked and thats been a while, + I think the devs aint even working on a patch. (I like the convienance of digi purchases but I am considering stopping them. (I buy alot from direct 2 drive as well, I actually have 5 PCs just on my own personal home network, it helps me learn things and because I am always tinkering with my PCs hardware I am constantly having to activate the software, what is frustrating is if in theory I were to download a hacked copy I would not be getting all this crap, so who is this hurting? Fact is more need to start thinking along the lines if a games good it will sell, I also believe with all the stink up about piracy etc that more people are aware that it doesnt help anyone if people download and never buy a thing, there are actually people out there who collect games and if they like something they have downloaded they will buy and reccomend to a friend, this isnt getting thought about though at all, heck I remember when I paid out I think it was well over
