Hey folks. Just reloaded JA2 specifically to give v 1.13 a shot and I must say the array of changes is very impressive. I happen to know a little bit about patrolling and combat operations because I am in the Army, but I get a little frustrated because I can't figure out where my mercs can take cover, especially in the rural environments. The CPU seems to have a pretty good grasp of what bushes and trees will stop a bullet but I am at a loss most of the time. I've tried utilizing the delete key but most of my troops still get shot up pretty good by the bad guys. Can someone give me a clue what I need to do to keep my soldiers alive in the woods? Thanks a bunch for the help.

Basically, put tall grass, trees and/or rocks (the more solid the better) between you and the enemy, while being in the lowest stance possible (prone preferred). Ideally, cover should be adjacent to the mercs, or it can hamper your accuracy and/or visibility as much as the other side's. If you're still getting shot, try moving a square backwards or to the side. Sometimes cover isn't in the optimal place to interfere with the trajectory of the bullet.

I was confused every now and then, at first, but I guess you just have to give yourself some time to get used to the cover system and how bad guys think.
