I started my game and slowly worked my way to San Mona to earn some cash gun running. Ended up liberating Chitzena and running into Hamous. So now I have wheels to gun run. Garrisoned Ira to train militia for counter attacks.

I sent a team to Cambria to try and lock up the hospital for some medical care. I ended up pulling out and heading to Drassen, for the airport and a second mine. I picked up Dimitri's forgetful ass on the way.

So, I liberated all of Drassen.

I wasn't FULLY prepared for the counter attack from Queen Deidrianna.

My team was:
Sniper: Reaper
Gunner: Ivan
Gunner: Wolf
Close Quarters: Zombie
Fire support: Ira
Fire Support: Gasket
Fire Support: Dimitri
Fire Support: Twenty two freshly trained militia

Reaper, Ivan, Wolf, Zombie, and Dimitri were equipped with numerous grenades of varying types.

Placement:
Wolf to the north on top of mine encompassment to intercept enemy troops attacking from West.
Ivan and Dimitri were positioned to pick up troops coming from south east primarily and south secondary.
Zombie was in back yards with wire cutters to cut through fences for fast maneuvers. He also has mustard gas and smoke.
Ira is located to suppress enemies from the south road and also to support Zombie if he is overwhemlmed.
Gasket is tired, wounded, and has low AP. He stands in safe positions and fires on complete aotomatic.
Reaper is located on the roof. The sniper, he picks off all garbage and high threats to my team.

We also have some molotovs...

My men were almost in perfect postion and one minute later the enemy invaded! Poor time management on my part.
The fight dragged on for hours. Militia were good help in occupying enemies. I took out 32/87 without even taking a bullet to one of my team members. Militia were being dropped like flies, and I started to feel some pressure....I picked exactly the right moment to retreat for enemy troops were circling from ALL directions! We all ran to the extraction point to the Northeast of the map. Gasket's slow ass would have been ate by the carnivorous troops if he were one turn behind. I had Reaper and Ivan covering his ass. Wolf was alone to the north with MANY enemies surrounding the rooftop. He drooped and crawled all the way to the western part of the building, dropped from the roof and extracted to the west. The others extracted to.

Switch to auto resolve and the last of the bleeding militia is slaughtered. At least I got my team out of there and I could dig in for more defense or plan a counter attack of my own......ASSERTION FAILURE. Debug save did not work....Man.....

I play JA2 Gold, Ham 3.5, Wildfire 6.06, Aim, Map update. Settings are Expert, Iron Man.
ALL OF THAT AND I HAVE TO START OVER! I might just retreat to begin with so I don't experience the same problem.

LOL, what was the assertion error? Place a bug report in the bugs forum Wink

Playing on Iron Man is all well and good, but I still think playing normal and saving regularly prevents issues like that. Just don't save/reload.

Sounds like it was a good fight though Wink

Hmm... fortunately for me, the game rarely crashes on Iron man mode.

Right now, I'm playing on expert, with HAM and original JA2 1.13 stats.

What sucks is, that weapons stats suck. I mean, aren't rifles supposed to be more powerful than handguns? And how come shotgun with buckshot has damage of 40 or 50, if buckshot is essentially a dozen 8mm pellets flying at a speed similar to pistol projectiles. It ought be somewhat higher I think.

At least there's suppressive fire. Fending off thirty-five enemies with eight mercs on a roof is pretty easy.. the cheap mercs keep them down and not shooting with lots of flying lead, the more expensive ones kill the enemy.

Consider upping damage percentage values in INI Editor. With just 10-15%, differences between pistols, rifles and shotguns become significant to the point of really making you think about it. IIRC, I have 10% now. Even lowly Ithaca shotgun packs one mean punch, just enough to keep me from dumping it.

I've read a bit of this thread but want to get the point i'm concerned about.

I played 1.12 few years back and i've just started 1.13, not yet taken Drassen but am I to believe that as soon as I take Drassen this will happen? How much warning do I get.. how long till it happens?

Seems a bit crazy for the start of a game. I'm on novice.. will this make it any easier? I'm scared of Drassen now!!

Advice?
Cheers

If you're on novice, you should have 2 days at least until the Queen takes any action. Plus, if your INI says STRATEGIC_EVENT_SEND_TROOPS_TO_DRASSEN = FALSE, you're on the safe side Smile
You don't get any other warning except seeing enemy troops coming (if you can spot them, that is). The mod's author somehow assumes you're familiar with what is written in the INI setting. If you turn it on, you know it will happen.

I would leave it on. It's probably the most fun battle in the game. You've been tipped off that it's coming, so train up some militia and give it a go - just be sure to save first. Wink

You better be!! Very Happy Nah, it is not too bad, you can only have so many enemies in the sector at the same time, new ones come in from the sides as you kill old ones, just have a good strategy on how you want to deal with that and you will be fine.

You may want to go into the Drassen Counter Attack with the mind set that the first time you may need to try out different things until you find what works best.

The INI setting is checked when you "liberate" the last sector of the city, so the INI setting matters when the last enemy is killed.

By the way, it is possible to have the INI setting turned on and still not get the counter attack. It happened to me when an enemy fled into the middle sector as I was clearing the last city sector. When I terminated the enemy who ran away, this happened in a sector already occupied by me where the militia took out the guy. In this scenario I never got the counter attack.

This probably means that the game checks if your mercs killed the last soldier in Drassen. If it is not the case, the Queen can't blame it on you Smile
Heck, sounds like a legal excuse Smile "We didn't do it, go kill someone else for it" Smile

Wow, I've been away from JA2 for awhile so I down downloaded 1.13 again and found that right away I needed more IMP mercs when I was playing on the Experienced setting with tons of guns. I restarted in realistic mode so I don't have to deal with the bugs, but I've had a rough time of it. Always having people wounded and even with tons of guns not getting what I need.

I slog through 10 days to take all of Drassen though I had several good night attacks along the way and even wiped out a 20 man platoon. So I take the airport and chase after the retreating wounded. I I have some minor injuries and 4 of my mercs are out of commission. I send Joey my thief sniper into the mine sector after helping Ira for a bit to train up the blue shirt militia while Ira replenishes the empty middle factory sector. I leave the survives of the Airport assault where they are (good job but only one veteran, I was robbed).

Anyway it is late and I save my game and continue and soon find I'm going to be assaulted by 80 troopers. What the hell do I do? I saw them rip apart the sentries before calling it a night.

So I need advice on what I can do in the game and software wise. No time to fly anyone in and bring in the injured Mercs are out of the question. Can move Ira in, but what about the other militia.

I'm a veteran of more than a few battles and love to fight with militia, but the largest battles I've been in have only been about 20 or so enemy combatants. I've attacked with as little as two mercs, but damn!

All advice would be welcome....

Hi Rednight, After you are done reading what Logisteric posted, you will know that you are dealing with the Drassen Counter Attack. Next step is what to do. Probably you were caught unprepared, so there won't be many options.

If you have a minimum of 6-8 mercs (not militia) you may consider holding the mine sector. Go on a roof top, have 2-3 mercs with auto fire MPs or SMGs sit in the middle (to shoot enemies climbing up on the roof) and use the remaining mercs spread out in all directions 2-3 tiles away from the edge of the roof to shoot enemies approaching the building. Load everyone up with ammo and grenades, get some snacks and drink for yourself, and prepare for several hours of fighting.

If you have less than 6 mercs (also in acceptable health, min. 80-90% ok) then another strategy is to retreat (leaving Drassen completely), let the enemy kill all your militia, conquer all city sectors, wait until night, and retake all city sectors one by one. Probably the first two will have the most enemies as they will call in reinforcements from the adjacent sector. Don't worry too much about having enough ammo, you can get more from killed enemies, just disengage (at night easy), go to a corner, wait for the enemy to "cool down", pick up ammo, and kill some more.

Having good weapons will make both strategies easier, if you need some pointers feel free to check out my Wiki (in my signature), there are some battle strategies and tables with weapons and attachments.

Good luck, good hunting, and godspeed! Smile

My always winning tactic against those 70-80 baddies is to let them capture the mine sector daytime, then attack them when night comes. Quickly climb the roof on the northeast corner and shot them one by one.

stomp 1.0a + DBB912 + WF maps, insane

defending drassen mine is a lot easier playing WF map, the enemy from the west can only attack from top left corner, one merc with white phosphorus grenades can handle all of them, just dont be stingy with them;

i placed my main force in the bottom left corner to setup a stronghold with snipers, mortars and machineguns; ordered all militia to retreat back to the mining facility as reserve (the enemy from the east will advance rather slowly and when they reach the mine the militia will greet them)

no casualties...gotta love the machinegun supression effect =p

BEST PART OF THE GAME.

First time i played 1.13 (not so long ago actually)...

well... first time i really underestimated the onslaught!
I thought something BIG will come, but i figured something like 25 black shirts, its still the beginning of the game... surely nothing really nasty. I barricaded myself in the church. Basically trying to get the most view out of the windows.
Team was:
1)IMP
2)Barry
3)Ira
4)Igor
Not many times i get really surprised by a tactical game. Especially JA which i consider to know pretty well, used to play it ALLOT a few years back, so its "home ground". I honestly had to svae-load a couple of time to "save private Barry" who got snied by an unseen enemy all the time even if he was lieing on his fat belly facing away from any possible window-angle. Great fight, took me half a day and i probably failed a test because of that battle.

A "one fight before i start studying for the test" became a whole day of saving Barry.
Awsome fight.

Second time i decided to try this "insane" difficulty. I have a god complex as it is and wanted to see how dif can it be?
i was more prepared. Mentally that is, clearing a few hours off my day...
The battle was easy. Just as i thought i "figured it out" by taking the small north-eastern house with 3 "men":
1)IMP
2)Buns
3)Ira
Covering the window, door (form he bathroom) and the other window with Ira. I had trained militia so i basically knew where the enemy is coming from. The militia got slaughtered, both by the blackshirts and when i got tired of just waiting for them to die i started shooting them myself. I more or less picked them up 2-3 at a time, they were more or less hovering the door entrance and Ira kept them off the other window with 3 Molotov cocktails. I was starting to get disappointed.. i expected more from INSANE!

THAN!
dam.. dam.. dam...

[color:#FF0000]A soldier came through the main door... all the way to the bathroom door, and STABBED my imp![/color] I was honestly shocked! There is noooooo wayyyyy he had so much action points... just the run... let alone the stabbing process.
wow.
Like Magic say's "i wish i could see it in slow-mo, like... a couple of times man..."
Of course Buns started giggling apologetically when she shot off the stabbers head.
Still.. just when i get the feeling this game is out of bunnies to take out of its arse it craps some more bunnies my way!

I could imagine the scene in a Gumpy movie: A huge Blackshirt (played by Wolf) throws his weapon to the grown and in an act of frenzy after seeing so may of his friends burn to death take out his knife and charges the door... he stabs the antagonist (which will probably be Gumpy in the movie), Gumpy will look at him all-google eyed yet not make a sound... just act surprised, not like in action where he scream like a girl! Buns (probably Buzz since i doubt Buns will agree to be in a Gumpy movie) taking her time to aim carefully with a gracious smile... BANG!
Im sorry... its not really funny...

Scene.

Better then reservoir dogs man...

Hot dang Miller, awesome story man!!

Yah, the insane AP bonus works best for moving as this eats up the least APs, the enemies can cover more ground.

Even though, holding off the DCA on Insane with just three guys and some militia, sounds tough even to me, I try to get at least 8-9 guys (some MERC personnel as they are cheap), this way I get more interrupts, also I try to get the roof bonus as well.

It's possible. I had one where I held them off with 6 peeps without using buildings interiors. Had Trixx (IMP), Igor, Grizzly, Dr.Q, Ira, and Fox. Had some mules too but they were in San Mona. Only thing that saved me was finding some good guns early (damn exploits that I didn't want). Had Trixx with an HK21e, Dr Q with an M14, Igor with a Dragunov SVD and Galil AR, the rest had 2x M16A1's and Ira got the AKM (and with Tracers gunned down a heap of them saving Fox, Igor and Grizzly on numerous occasions!).

Dang Kaerar, those are some nice guns! Unless I wait a little with the last sector, all I have are pistols and SMGs for DCA, if I am lucky an SKS. For example I am playing Demise of Man right now, don't think there is a DCA, but my best gun after taking all three sectors is (of course) a SKS with 5 mags and a small scope, sigh... Smile

Yeah I had hit San Mona and Chitzena first, but the thing is due to the problem with using higher tech guns than your current level and black shirts going you your tech not level tech you can get some good guns early. None of it was cheated though and I got most of those from stealing from the last few enemies in a sector. Was stoked with the HK21e though. Had a couple of grenade launchers carried by Grizzly too, but they didn't get a whole lot of use as they didn't bunch up much.

Nah Kaerar, I didn't mean nothing like cheating, San Mona and Chitzena first makes sense, did you get the commandos from the Kingpin goons? They are awesome close range with tracers, and decent short range with match.

their not that awesome in the game.

I always prefer the Kalashnikov... it has better range and all in all is better. This is also my main complain about the 1.13, the over-rated Kalashnikov. Yes its popular... but just coz its cheap and easy to get and repair.

In 1.13 the accuracy values are way too close for the Colt Commandos and Kalashnikov.

True, but accuracy is kinda broken from the original game limitations. That is being worked on I believe Wink

@Dieter - Nah I leave Kingpin alone most of the time, don't need the hassle. Plus with the M16A1's I managed to snaffle along with the AKM they are ok backup. The heavy hitters really smashed the enemy though Smile

Hi Kaerar, played Demise of Man all weekend, put over 40 hours in it, I really like what they did with weapon balance, auto fire spread, and the energy weapons are awesome!!

But the air strikes managed to get *all* Kingpin forces turned against me somehow, I don't really know what happened, all of a sudden the south people in and around the house lit up as enemies on the map - holly cow, thankfully it was at night. Cleared them out, went to Tony, came back, now everyone in the fighting arena lit up as enemies including the dude that usually takes the money, looks like I won't be doing the $20k trick... Smile

Have you played Demise of Man, how did you like it? If you haven't played it, DOM is on vanilla, so OIV, but there are a couple things in the game that are really worth checking out.

I spend almost 4 hours last night defending the Drassen airport from some 60+ attackers.. with Ira and Barry, on day 2, without any militias helping.

Experience level(yes I know, but my experience level was like insane without the extra cheat stuff from higher level).. I pumped the minimum size troop.. unlimited troop and aggressive stance for the beech.

Mod was HAMSTOMP + offtopic's drop all + Azazel's map. The game was to be played with NO IMP character, realistic setting, reduced guns.. I did set my starting money to 50K.

Starting team consist of
1) Razor from MERC (he will be my avatar for the game - useless with guns, awesome in 1 on 1, armed with nothing but a knife - donated by Igor - and a backup gun; the one he starts with)
2) Igor - I need another NO as I wont have any IMP and my droptime is at 3am.
3) Grunty - A NO. also a scout to prevent ambush.
4) Fox - A replacer for my IMP medic. With dual guns, she should be a good babysitter when I get a sniper later on.
5) Barry - my lockpicker and mechanic.
-AND- of course the free Ira.

Every one starts with pistols. Ammo drops was unusable to everyone BUT Ira.. dropped weapons jammed on average of 1 use. Barry dont starts with a repair tool, so cant even repair yet. BR access is vital.. Not to mentioned without mine income, I cant pay my team after their initial 2 weeks contract. So straight to Drassen I go. Razor became a beast as expected, conserving the ammo as much as I can on everyone else. Took the airport without problem. Ira cant train militia yet with only 14 leadership, so she goes into practicing teaching ghost. Out of all my merc, only Barry can train militia with his 29 leadership, so he stayed back alongside Ira while the other move on.

20 garrisons + reinforcement against 2 NO, Razor and Fox was not much of a problem during the night. Fox killed Doreen and Igor got a nice shiny MP5 to play from her cupboard... And a rare silencer drop too.. Mine sector played in the same tune. Expecting the counter, all 4 jumps onto a rooftop. Red dots fills the left sector.. then the bottom sector populated, right sector soon to follow.. here it goes, saved and advance the time .. ALL dots missing and no attack yet .. OH SHI-

True enough.. each of them goes to the airport where Barry and Ira is! Out of curiosity, I quicksaved then turn GABBI on to peek how many came by to visit. I think Gasket's line sums it up pretty much my thought "I think I just pissed on my pant"

Both Ira and Barry run to hole up in the dorm room (Azazel's map) with both their guns pointing to the door. The fun part was when both of them starts to ran out of ammo and have to salvage the loot.. except the loot are all compressed on 1 single place, the open door where all the baddies being choke off . Being a courageous girl (well, she have Angelina Jolie's face in my game), Ira sacrifice her fine ass to collect the ammos and guns to throw it off to Barry. I think she got few extra holes by the end.. but no worries, she got the medkits, Barry dont Wink

It surprised me that after few years playing this game, it still find a way to amaze me. And I definitely gonna play without IMP from now on.. I often end up making 6 godlike characters, who I dont need to pay after that initial payment.. but with no IMP, I'm forced to alter my way of playing the game more to compensate the weaker mercs at my disposal. And Barry and Ira kill more on that single night compared to all these year whenever they on my side.

1. disable reinforcements (irrc: allowreinforcements only in cities = TRUE)
or
2. disable the entire attack

both in the ini

in case 1 they will show up, but they won't reinforce - they garisson these sectors to be finished of squad by squad

Wow.....it was some weeks back I posted, but it was a hell of a fight. I mean damn. I haven't been in battles that big for awhile. Expert is killer and really testing my knowledge and tactics.

30 days in I only have two Mines and two SAM sites to my name and they've changed hands. Mostly though Drassen where my IMP squad along with the lovely "Buns" took on the enemy tooth and nail. After being driven out of the mine sector I regrouped and got things in order. Basically that means for me Mercs taking time out to heal up and repair the many captured weapons. I also fought around the area and three mercs took on a much larger force in the swamp.

Water makes a great barrier to cross, so you hear them coming in the night, and than you cut them down. Also got killed the last of redshirts in outside of Skyrider's residence. That completed the fight. When I finally got in to Drassen's mining center again it was of coarse at night (hey they call me Red Night for a reason. Moved around the whole area eliminating enemy troopers as quietly as possible until one went down load and the enemy surged at us. I occupied the top of a building with my mercs while IRA was back at the Airport.

The sliced and diced the enemy with very few wounded on their side. Grenades and sniper rifles accounted for the bulk of the causalities, and in the end I counted over 35 enemy bodies...including elite personnel who joined the fight. After reestablishing defenses and healing up I marched on the nearest SAM site, but not before dealing with repeated attempts to retake the mines.

Now I have the small Northwest mine and SAM site, picked up Dimitri, and completed the San Mona quest. I've bought more arms at Tony's back room, and cleaned up in cage fighting, and sold a leather shop. Not bad and now I have several new AIM and Merc members on the payroll as I march to Cambria. I've seen some good fights and a host of weapons. In fact when my new arrivals were shipped in I didn't even bother with buying them weapons. Some stuff needs to be fixed, but I walked away with a ton of gear. We'll see how these MERC morons fare. Most times I don't waste any time. Thanks for the advice guys...and remember let's all be careful out there.

I plan on taking Kingpin's money soon. I like cutting down his Assassins and than working my way back to him. Two sectors worth of fighting in San Mona and plenty of great gear. Afterward the bars and brothel are open and free to you. One Assassin arrived on scene while my people were sleeping. He opened fire on poor Flo on her first day nearly killing her, but a militia blue shirt walked right up behind him and blew him away with a shot gun blast. Great brief fight.

I'm just about to experience Drassen since making a lot of changes to the game. Between the AR-equipped foe, low quality IMPs to roleplay rebels, income and expense adjustments to make hiring and losing militia actually significant (and therefore didn't train militia just to lose them), and raised suppression settings, I don't think I have much chance. Then again, my guys are better suited for this and should take plenty down by using building corners (I'll try this mostly from the ground). If I'm smashed, I'll do the smart thing, reload, snipe some and then advance back to middle Drassen.
