I've modded some ammo in my vanilla JA2 that use existing ammo types, like a 45-round magazine of 5.45mm rounds and a 20-round magazine of 5.7mm, stuff like that.

As this is JA2, I was careful not to make more than 2 different ammo sizes for the same ammo type.

However, when I load the same ammo type into a weapon with a lower or higher mag capacity, I get a different item when I unload the weapon. So, if I try to load the P90 with a 20-round AP mag, even if I load the weapon to full capacity, the item I get when I unload it is a 20-round HP mag. If I load that back into the P90, I'll get a .45 cal pistol mag when I unload it.

This only happens when I load a weapon with my modded mags if they are not of the same mag capacity of the weapon. The item I get is always the next item in the data list (in this case, the item I modded is 78, followed its HP variant at 79, then the .45 pistol mag at number 80). If I load the appropriate mag size to the weapon then it will unload normally.

Is there anyway to get around this? Something with the special offset value?

Did you use JA2 1.13's XML-Editor to edit those ammo items?

Its vanilla 1.12. I used west's weapon editor and batman's gui editor to edit the weapons.

well, just thoughts - afaik those kind of probs were in next to every vanilla-mod (i remember lot's of fun guessing what unloading would yield) - maybe it was squashed 'on the fly' to 1.13

Well that sucks.

This doesn't happen in UB, though. Overall the way the data is handled in UB is more streamlined.

Oh well. Guess I'll just have drop some stuff.

With the ammo issue, for Vanilla they all have to be in order. lowest to highest in ID number. If there is something in between it will mess up the setup and then cause problems like you describe.

Go though you csv file with excel and re-order it so all ammo is linear and each calibre has the sizes going up in chronological order from lowest to highest. No need to drop stuff, just need to be extremely neat with ID numbers Wink

So if I added 20 round mag of 5.7mm, and I want to keep the 50 round smg 5.7mm magazine, how would I sort their ID?

Also, what do you mean by ID? special offset value or something else?

Been a while since I have done all this, but in the CSV file (it says txt but it's a csv table) generated by W4ST's editor all items are in an order of sorts. You'll notice all the ammo are in a specific order.

For instance, 5.7mm ammo is located at Item91 (first column). That's the 20rd mag. The 50rd mag is Item92. If you wanted to add a 100rd mag, you'd need to place it at Item93. Otherwise you'd get errors on using wrong size mags to resupply guns.

The bigger problem is that to edit/move/add stuff you will disrupt ALL maps that have those items in them. Even if you just insert one (like the 100rd mag) ALL subsequent mags would then be out of order and any placed weapons and ammo in maps from that ItemXXX onwards would be out of sync.

So when editing ammo you either replace a whole group or edit a lot of maps.

By the way Excel or a free Spreadsheet editor is highly recommended and whatever you do DON'T Alter Column widths and save. You WILL ruin the file (man I learnt that the hard way!).

Ok, thanks guys. Guess I'll have to say goodbye to the Five-Seven. Was the first thing I modded back in the day, image and everything. But then again, its not like guns are used that often.

It's quite convoluted once you realise that any change in that list equates to a marathon map cleanup. Therefore it's highly important to get your item build right first before altering the maps. There's nothing worse than altering all the maps to find you missed something Wink

No way I'm messing with the maps for this.

Speaking of which, is there a way to edit JA2 maps without converting to UB format? Also, when editing maps with NPCs in them, all the dialouge boxes show the number values for leadership skill, like in debug mode. Any way to keep that from happening when editing maps?

Yes there is you need the German beta exe which included the editor. It's buggy so save often and have many backups as it was prone to corruption too. You'll also need to run W4ST's txt file on that exe to get your guns in the right places in the maps.

Editing all the items in the vanilla maps isn't so hard, Takes about 2 days solid.

Or here http://www.wmwiki.com/hosted/ja2/Tools/

It's the JA2_Beta_0.95_DE

There's a special way to get the editor part working, but I can't remember how Sad

You have to use the JA2EDITOR.bat file to launch the editor. There was some hinky bs with the install on some versions of the Beta Editor but the one I sent Kermi (and should be on his site) has no problems loading.

Can anyone elaberate/explain this a bit more?
What happens to the maps?
What happens to a map when you mod or rename a weapon?

I am now in the process of modding my weapons and ammo.I have not travelled out of A9 recently, still modding and starting new game alot.

Is this the only problem?
I'll be safe if I'm only replace items?
