Hi,

I give up, i cant find any other posts relating to this, maybe someone here can help.

I have started again a new game of UC, installed JA2 gold, upgraded to 1.13 then UC mod and UC-1.13NAS v20100824. After i clear the first map and talk to Carmen i get a run time error and the message that Carmen doesnt have the gift item to give me, presume the laptop.

I have checked a number of places, the prof.dat shows carmen equipped with the laptop, although the map editor doesnt show that he has it as an item.

Am i missing something really obvious or just doing something basic wrong? I got half way through my previous game before giving up as i had a runtime error on the cutscene when i captured a town and couldnt avoid it but at least i got past the first map.

Any help appreciated.

In plain JA2, Carmen needs to give you a diskette, not the laptop. Don't know if this holds true for UC, but try placing Carmen's Diskette in his inventory.

Thanks, i just checked and he does say that "everything is on this laptop". I tried adding the diskette just in case but no luck.

If the laptop is not in his inventory according to the map editor then the XML file that controls merc inventories is missing the entry. Let me check the originals here...

EDIT: seems to be working from my end. From the .7z archive that was uploaded (not working files), the Laptop/Item 228 is present in Carmen's inventory. Carmen's quest is working fine in the test install used to ensure the ESNIP upload could be downloaded. Since you did take a look at Carmen via the Map Editor, what else was there in his inventory?

EDIT2: By the way the file that controls all of this is: MercStartingGear.xml, Carmen is index 78, and the Laptop is Item 228

on the map editor all he shows is $5,000. Checked the starting gear via the editor and he has a machete in pocket 1 and a computer diskette in slot 2, changed that to the laptop but same error. Would i need to restart or should that change have made a difference?

No items seems to indicate the game isn't seeing anything to load. I'm guessing AIM Merc's don't have any inventory as well (they should have some non-weapon gear). Use of the XMLEditor may have contaminated the file. While the XMLEditor has no problem opening the XML's it is not aware of the new stuff. Since NAS 0.61B the MercStartingGear.xml actually has a new structure, which likely was overwritten when Save was hit in the XMLEditor.

I would suggest deleting the folder Data-UC113NAS and replacing it with the one in the archive UC-1.13NAS v20100824.7z just to be safe.

I have done that but still no luck. The mercs i hired did arrive with non-weapon items. I will reinstall and not change anything and see if i still get the same issue. Thanks for you help.

SilverStar, when you start the game via the INI Editor, check that your are running the JA2v1.13 Executable = ja2_3578_NAS_0.61b and not ja2.exe

The easiest way for me to replicate the failure is to use a non-NAS Ja2.exe, and I noticed your description does not include installing Warmsteel's New Attachment System Beta (0.61B is the current one). The UC-1.13NAS Hybrid only contains its own files, and not the core NAS stuff, which includes a Map Editor that can read the new MercStartingGear.xml format correctly. I replicated what you were seeing when I ran the non-NAS Map Editor.

Your right i was running Ja2.exe, will try again tonight. Thank you, i thought it would be something obvious that i had missed. My last install did include extra mods and when it repeatedly crashed i thought it was because i was using too many changes so trimmed it back.
