Before anyone leans into me for not using the search function to find a thread to post this in, I did. But every search phrase I tried for the location of Arulco turned up nothing relevant to the topic.

So I was poking through the AIM alumni files and I came across Hamous's file (can't believe he did an internship for AIM) and it said he stole the ice cream truck in Paris and was last seen heading for Istanbul in it.

Looking at Google Maps, I found that Paris and Istanbul lie roughly 3,000 kilometers apart, and the road to Istanbul passes through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and Bulgaria. If Hamous stopped somewhere along that road, Arulco may be somewhere on the tiny spit of Romania between Bulgaria and Serbia.

Of course, this assumes that Hamous stopped along that road. If he didn't, then I'm stumped.

I knew this topic was brought up (again) just recently. I used the search function with the words "Aruclo" and "where" and this turned up:

check this thread

I remember the discussion in that thread being quite interesting. Be sure to read all of it!

Btw, I didn't mean any offense in the other threat. Wink

I tried "where is Arulco", "Arulco location", and variations of those.

Guess the "is" threw it off. I'll just stick this into that thread Razz

Yes, I think this topic has been discussed to death in all JA2 fora.

My 2 Cents:
Hamous stealing a truck in Paris and being seen on his way to Istanbul doesn't follow we are talking about this truck, nor that he still is on his way to Turkey when you meet him in Arulco.

In return Arulco can hardly be a Balkans land with the leading families being Hispanic ('Enrico', 'Miguel') and about 1/4 of the population black. This mixture can only be found in Latin America. Not to mention such things like flora and fauna, place names, or the obviously PC-American ruins in Chitzena.

Deidranna, Kingpin and Tony are Romanians; but Deidranna is labled as a foreigner from a rather far away and exoctic land the Arulcans don't know much about. The only other eastern Europeans are Iggy and Conrad; but both are mercenaries, so that doesn't say a thing either. All other non-Arulcans living down there are either western Europeans or US-Amercians, neither group you would find in any countable numbers living on the Balkans.

Adding to that the fact that it is, and always had been, a monarchy (means it hardly can have been part of the Eastern Block for some 40 years), and that the Arulcan army had been equipped by the US according to Ira, follows that it is (had been) a relativly stable pro-western state somewhere in Latin America. The high mountains in the north would suggest somewhere around the Andes.

Some more:

The ocean is to the west, what means Arulco is Pacific side of America. Best guess it is meant to be Ecuador with the "evil neighbour" in UB being Colombia.

It takes 1 1/2 hour to march from one sector to the other. Given a normal walking speed of 5 km/h this would follow that the sectors are 7.5 kms apart. Taking this formular Arulco would just have a size of 14,400 km2 (compare it to the 256,000 km2 of Ecuador). This would be unreasonable small and major cities would be much to close to each other, for example Alma just 30 kms from Cambria.

On the other hand, it takes 30 min to travel between sectors by car and 10 min by helicopter. This would give the truck or Hummer a speed of just 15 km/h and the heli a speed of 45 km/h. Much to slow. Even on the bad roads down there the car would go by some 50 km/h, what would give the helicopter a more reasonable speed of 150 km/h. With these numbers sectors would 25 km apart, with Alma being 100 kms from Cambria. This would give Arulco a more reasonable size of 160,000 km2.

I would rather take this number and assume the mercs had been given superhuman walking speed to make the game playable at all; otherwise it would at least take 5 hours to march from one sector to the other, what would make a rather boring game because the mercs would always arrive completly exhuasted in need of several hours of rest.
