Ok, so I have just run through JA2+1.13on expert mode and am now mentally preparing for INSANE difficulty. Finally taking a hard look at all the assault rifles and saw there are some crazy new mods that change some guns completely. So i wanted to find out what the best ASSAULT RIFLE combo is out there. Looking for something that can burst/auto really well and do heavy damage to elite units. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? let me know what accessories you have setup too

Well, i there is no one ultimate setup. Bu i prefer something like this.
From worst to best

Assault rifle
Hk 416->Valmet 82->Fan fal OSW/AS VAL(AS VAL does less damage but is better against heavy armor)

Sniper rifle
Mossin Nagnat->M21->SR-25

Anti-Materiel rifle
I dunno. Pick something fast and light. Damage will by devastating anyway.

Sidearm for designed snipers
Berreta 93, KAC PDW, MP-7

Heavy weapons
Mortar (obviously), Milkor MGL, RPG.

Get also some smoke, tear, mustard granades if you need to get out of sticky situations. Normal granades are also good if you tweak some settings.

Insane is very mangament heavy. You need at least 2 fight teams and alot of additional mercs for training, reapaing and defending in cities. In towns like drassen you can have only flo or hamous but in cities like alma you need at least 3 mercs for defend. Also good thing is to attack enemy around you cities from helicopter with you 2nd team while you 1st team is buzzy.

Mossin Nagant I think is an old WWII rifle. It's not a bad SR for it's age. The "Knight SR-25" is an old Stoner systems SR. Also not horrible. But I prefer the M24 as a bolt-action and the HK PSG1 as an automatic SR. Or even the Dragunov SVD.

For "anti-material" SRs, I used the AI AWM in my last run through and really liked it. It's not supper fast, but it's very accurate and tends to do more then enough damage.

I tend to issue all my mercs the FN P90 as a "sidearm" and for stealth opps.

As for ARs, I actually like the FN SCAR-68 SV. The 6.8mm ammo does comparable damage to 7.62 but recoil tends not to be as harsh. Range isn't a good but I found the 480m was more then enough for most of my battles. I usually fit a trigger group, AR suppressor, Rifle-LAM, ACOG, and relfex sight (I've been playing NAS mode) attachments. Plus either the FN EGLM for heavy weapons mercs, a Grippod/Foregrip for auto weapon mercs, or a Grippod/Bipod for "standard" mercs.
The other AR I really enjoyed during my last run through was the Steyr AUG-A2. Only trouble I had with it was no Rifle-LAM but I "cheated" and made that a valid attachment. Didn't get a chance to try the A3 variant, but I'm betting it's a good option as well.

Basically any AR will do. Some are pretty good but few are actually bad. FAL's, SIG 550, SCAR's and HK 416/417's are some I like.

For snipers the Blaser R93 is a personal favorite early on, after which I switch to a .338 rifle.

I also use a 7.62x51mm AR with a 7x scope in a sort of sharpshooter role.

any 7.62 battle rifle will do, tbh, the sooner you get some, the batter

i tend to have a lot of M14 EBRs, Galil AR is very good too, nice long ranged, hard hitting weapons...other good ones, HK417, FN SCAR-H SV, FN FAL, all my guys end up kitted out with FN five-sevens

early game i try to use mini-14s or M1 carbines a lot...or a prized XM177-E1 if you can find them

i've never found a real use for late game 5.56 rifles or LMG/AR hybrids, i find them to have too short range

Been a fan of the HK 417. But my question is, does picking a scope matter? Or should i just load up every accessory and the highest x scope i can onto the assault rifle?

Scopes with higher sight range usually also have increased tunnel vision -> field of view in the immediate surroundings gets considerably cut down.

Also certain scopes can have a minimum range for the bonus to apply.

Usually the higher the magnification, the higher the sight range and aim bonus, but also the higher the tunnel vision penalty (and dunno if it's implemented in standard 1.13, but high-end scopes might also have an AP penalty).

yea the 'sniper scope' adds like 3 AP to any weapon. But if i have a x7 scope, does that make me worse at aiming close range?

Yes, it does. You can look it up if you right-click on the scope or the gun fitted with the scope in your merc's inventory, there's a value for "minmum range for aiming bonus".

This has changed quite a bit over the last few installs of 1.13 I have played. The latest version I played was 1.13.4057 version, and in that version a gun equipped with a 7X scope returned a horrible chance to hit within 10 or 15 tiles. The numbers had to be edited manually to restore some semblance of reality.

I understand it will be re-adjusted somewhat in the next release.

Here is a recent thread regarding that issue:

That depends on how far away the enemy is. If they're really close, assault rifles are way better than sniper rifles. Machineguns are only useful if you play with suppression turned on.

After a long period of comparison and testing I decided on the DSR-1 as my favorite sniper rifle. I'd take the M21 EBR over the SR25 because it has a quicker ready time with a retractable stock.

For 6.8mm ARs don't forget the SCAR SV and the Steyr AUG A3. They're both solid.

For 7.62mm I like the HK417, the SCAR H SV, and the FN FAL OSW. The last is more CQ-oriented, the SCAR is longer range, and the HK falls nicely in the middle.

I've been extremely happy with the AR57 conversions as well. They chop through enemy armor like it's made of paper.

Sniper rifles are better if you don't turn suppression on (which really takes away from the game) ; however now that scopes degrade performance at close range considerably I prefer to keep automatics in the majority, especially since bullets deviate far less than they used to when fired in long bursts. Ultimately 5.56/5.45 rounds start losing efficiency about midway through the game but you can fire far more down range accurately and thus impede your enemy's progress nicely. 7.62x51's are devastatingly powerful but since you wont ever have a significant amount in the air their suppression will be low - thus the 7.62's typically knock them down for good while the lighter weaponry whittles down their AP's. If you use only sniper rifles on higher difficulties you wont be able to keep up with the enemy's numbers and after a few kills they'll overrun you, that's why you need considerably automatic power to slow them down and open them up to your marksmen to pick off. Add grenade launchers and mortars and you can keep an enemy far larger in number away from your position.

The AR's other people recommended to you are solid choices - personally I like the AN-94 with a cut down stock since it becomes a very fast weapon to fire off with so it's great for running and gunning. The FAMAS I like also because after tricking it out it's firing rate becomes insane and it's accuracy is pretty great also, I gave it to Igor and he simply destroys everyone at close-mid range.

Depending on the situation and personal playstyle, many weapon setups can have their uses, although they may fall short on different occurances.
Take some LMGs, for instance: The MG36 RAS may lack the damage (due to the weaker calibre) and range of the HK21E, but it is lighter and faster and fits an AR Suppressor, so on night ops it may be the weapon of choice.

@GASK3T Mayby M21 is faster but to SR 25 can by attached LAM longrange laser. It's not that M21 suck. I love both weapons but lasers realy do good. And you can spend less AP on aiming on medium ranges with LAM laser.

The M21 EBR can take a Rifle-LAM as well. Add a retractable stock and it becomes as fast (if not faster) than the SR-25, it is also more reliable, but this comes at the expense of 1 point of damage.

I have become a big fan of the SCAR-L with the special 6.whatever ammo/sniper attachment kit (think it was the most expensive of all the scar kits). It can put on pretty much every accessory, shoots far, does high damage with the special ammo. Only problem is that you have to order the ammo since nobody ever drops it. I also enjoy the m4 colt with the 50 shot silencer mod kit with the purple 5.whatever ammo. shadow can do 100-200 damage with a two shot burst and at night he never misses. Still think that the G11 is the best gun in the game though. Its 3 shot burst kills pretty much anything. Only mod kit i havent tried is the m14/m21 ebr kit on the m14. prob do that tonight.
