OK, I have what is likely a real newby question and I appologize ahead of time if it is. But I have not been able to figure this out so here I am.

What is the ranking of armor? How can you tell if one is better than the other?

So far what I know is

leather jackets
Flack Jacket
Kevlar Vest.

BUT I do not know which is better or where the following fit in

Kevlar Leather Jacket
Guardian Vest
Spectra

I guess what I need to know is what is better? Guardian or Spectra?

Short answer - Spectra is better than Guardian.

TIP: You can swap out the armors while in the inventory and look at the change in armor rating (it's stated as a percentage).

Spectra is the best armor full stop, if you treat it with compound 18, or some green jelly then it becomes even stronger, next would be guardian (vest only), then Kevlar, then flak jacket. Anything else isnt worth having as armor unless you want to die.

Don't forget the steel helmets, by the way, I guess they're about equal to the flak jacket?
Anyway, be sure to check the armor stats in combat, because sometimes a well repaired guardian vest an be a lot better then spectra.

Just nitpicking my 2cts. Smile
There's that lightweight, kevlar-leather-jacket at Angel's for $950.

Oh, and don't worry about asking questions here, most people are abnormally helpful.

Do you buy it?
Angel's giving it for free if you bring his sister.
My night ops experts love it!Looks cooler treated with compound 18;treating it with "royal jelly" makes it so light I always feel like cheating.
Too bad it doesn't offer pockets for lockpicking kit, wire cutters, first aid kit,two camo kits and a Glock 18! Very Happy

Thanks folks. Actually over the weekend, I finally noticed the percentage and figured it out. LOL But I am thankful to know I have a place I can come with my questions.

Even though I know you can just rescue Maria, I usually buy it too. After all, during this transaction you learn about the quest so skipping this has always felt like cheating to me. I'm not critiquing anyone else's style, just saying how I do it and why.

As for armour progression, I'm pretty sure if they are treated the same way (same % of repair, same chemical treatment) Spectra is always better than Guardian. I'd love to find out I'm wrong here but really don't think so.
It would be great if (as AZAZEL alludes) different armours had different advantages like in UC but I think in regular Ja2 there is a simple progression from:

Flack
Kevlar/Leather
Kevlar
Guardian
Spectra

with the treatments affecting each at the same percentage.
Some kind of specialty helmet would also be cool perhaps with a built in night scope, flashlight, range finder (utilising the hit chance calculator perhaps?) etc.

OK, Time for dumb question #2. What is the hit calculator? Have I missed something somewhere? Is there a setting I have yet to find? Or is this in the Add on which I haven't yet played because I am still trying to finish the first game?

Sorry, the hit chance calculator is a player made modifacation that tells you how likely each shot you aim will hit it's intended target. It's not included in the original game but can be found in Madd Mugsy's mod (the original author of the hit chance calc was Dvornik if I'm remembering correctly) but can also be found as a seperate addition at Ja Galaxy and most of the other Ja2 websites that offer downloads (links to these can be found at the top of this page).
It probably best to finish the basic game before trying any mods because a lot of them are very difficult compared to vanilla Ja2.
Have fun man.

Excellant! I look forward to it. This is one of the greatest games I have ever played. Of course my wife doesn't think so. Wink
