Alright, here's the deal: I've never even played Jagged Alliance 2. Always wanted to, but for some reason, I just never have. I don't know any of the acronyms related to the game, or any of the terminology that may be used. It can make it difficult to find what I am looking for without assistance of someone who is a bit more seasoned with this particular environment.

Tonight I started looking for games similar to Fallout 2 which I might be able to access the source code for. I was pleasantly surprised. This game is a perfect fit for what I am thinking, and the source is available.

So here are my questions:

How do I gain access to the source code? If I buy the game on Steam or Good Old Games, can I afterwords access the source? Is either preferable for this use?

A question that I figure there is an answer to out there: Is there a guide for getting started opening and viewing the source? I have no idea where to start searching aside from searching the forums for "source code"... Then questions arise such as:
"Should I look within the vanilla game section, or elsewhere?"
"It's probably somewhere in this 'JA2 Technical Department' but I have no idea where or under what name. Crap?"
"Google, none of this is really what I am looking for, why can't you read my mind better?"
"This seems like a friendly environment of like-minded people interested in truly great games, might they help me?"

Can anyone give me a hand or point me in the right direction, please?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums.

You can download the source(s) separately - it has nothing to do with where you bought the game from.

If anything, I'd recommend the modded 1.13 version of the code though. It's under development by modders, but as far as I'm concerned stable and superior in every way to the original:
https://81.169.133.124/source/ja2/trunk/GameSource/ja2_v1.13/Build/

If you want to set up a sync with that folder, have a look at this thread under "v1.13 Development Center":
http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=56723#Post56723

You can open those files with any text editor, but if you're getting serious about coding yourself, you're going to need something like "Microsoft Visual Studio" for example.

Okay, thanks. I found a few links to the source, however I wasn't having much luck finding any links that were still active. I will give these a look.

The source referred to is not the original game source, it's the source of the v1.13 mod which has been modified a lot compared to vanilla ja2

You have four choices: Vanilla, 1.13, Stracciatella and Stable Modding Project.

Links for the Vanilla, i.e. unmodified, source code in this thread seem to work.

You would be intereseted in 1.13 only if you planned on making some mods, as there has been A LOT of work put into that and IMHO the source code got a little bit bloated for some other purpose. I gave it only a brief look and I am new to this forum as well, so this might be an uninformed opinion. But given that:

Tonight I started looking for games similar to Fallout 2 which I might be able to access the source code for. I was pleasantly surprised. This game is a perfect fit for what I am thinking, and the source is available.

Legend tells of a legendary coder whose programming skills were the stuff of legend. His name was Tron. In six days he created the Stracciatella project and he rested on the seventh day. Well, maybe not, but he took the Vanilla code, ported it to SDL, made it cross platform, squashed loads of bugs and then he went away. So Stracciatella should be ideal for "what you are thinking". You can get the latest version from here.

There is another project called JA2: Stable Modding Project which builds on the Stracciatella code base. It aims to strip the engine to the bare bones and delegate other stuff outside. As I understand it, it is similar to the FIFE engine which started out as Fallout 2 replacement engine, but its goals sadly changed over time :bawling:. SMP's HQ is at http://ja2smp.no-ip.org/. There is a short guide on how to compile it: http://ja2smp.no-ip.org/projects/ja2smp/wiki/WikiGetSMP

That remark about searching the internet for Fallout-like open source(d) engine reminds me of me.
