Do you up your BR settings to get scopes and stuff sooner? Edit mercs profiles to start with SMGs? Or just turn it off?

Actually, i find that handguns are better than SMGs in the beginning. They are not hampered by range like in OCTH, and they can fire so much faster than they actually score more hits.

I suggest you to use AFS mod , there's a lot of changes that makes NCTH better. You can hit stuff without scopes... Check the pdf included with the download for the full list.

Ira with her 38 did seem a little less useless under NCTH, but at the same time I was finding it so much more effective to just send autofire down range rather than aim at all(until I discovered aimed auto), and my usual SKS/M1/Mini-14 improvised sniper role got chucked after like 2 battles.

Yeah, in vanilla NCTH, rifles without scopes are totally useless. Autofire is very powerful : quite precise + the suppression effect.

AFS's major changes are more accurate scope less weapons, and less accurate autofire.

I tend to rely on hiring mercs for a day and stealing their equipment. I like to play on slow weapon progression, so I generally need something I can expect to get the ammo for easily.

Wolf's fifth loadout is probably my favorite one to steal at the moment. The Aug Para is a great starting gun. Common ammo, good range, and it comes with a precious 2x scope. The toolkit wolf comes with is pretty useful too. If you need a second aug para, you can take Luc's fifth loadout as well.

Ok, just downloaded AFS. It's fully compatible with the current 1.13 build?

It has been tested with the most recent builds of v1.13 available to the general public (EDIT: the AIMNAS SCI includes the latest v1.13 build available to the general public, AIMNAS specifically does not support NCTH at present time). Nothing that has been discussed for near-term versions of v1.13 raises any alarms in my mind. How "current" are we talking about?

Note: if your definition of "fully compatible" includes save games, then no, start a new game.

The most recent version of the core 1.13 has multiple loadouts. I wasn't talking about AIMNAS.

How do you change the loadout, I don't see an option, just a bunch of extra slots that are empty.(I'm using 4552).

Stock campaign/mod v1.13 for the current "official" release (since you mention 4552, I'm guessing that's what you're running) does not have more than one loadout setup for each A.I.M. merc. The executable (JA2.exe) supports New Starting Gear Interface (NSGI), but the data entries for it are simply not setup.

Quick Guide:

Stock v1.13 (Data-1.13) = original NCTH, no extra loadouts, build 4552
AIMNAS (Data-AIMNSG) = no NCTH, multiple A.I.M. Loadouts, build 4561 if you stick with the SCI
Alrulco Folding Stock (AFS) = modified NCTH, multiple A.I.M. Loadouts, no specific v1.13 core but it is recommended that you use build 4553 or higher (4552 will work, just don't use the ammo box hot key)

EDIT: if the extra A.I.M. loadouts are present you'll see numbered "Kit" buttons (up to 5) along the bottom of the merc's screen.
