Hi,

Just started playing Arulco Revisited after a loooong break from JA2. My problem is, I kind of hate the new inventory system. And the reason is that even though it makes the game more realistic etc, it reduces the play-ability of the game for me. Basically I don't find LBE stuff interesting at all, and if I were able to do some modifications to the game, I would probably remove the whole slot structure altogether and just set a weight limit for equipment. Would reduce the annoying micro management a lot.

Well, anyways, since the NIV is here to stay, and I cannot disable it since I really like the NAS, I was wondering how to reduce the micro management and re-planning of soldiers' equipment all the time. Is it possible to use some sort of cheat to get the best possible LBE for my mercs right in the beginning so I wouldn't need to worry about those any more?? Maybe I would have enough energy to learn one type of LBE gear and use it for all my mercs. That way I wouldn't need to worry about which item can be put to which pocket/slot all the time.

Also, is the there an INI option that could be used to remove the must to remove backpack before climbing to a roof? I know, this feature makes the game more realistic, but again, play-ability wise it's a pain in the ass, IMO.

AFAIK the backpack thingie cannot be disabled in ini or similar.

If you are keeping your backpacks for more inventory size, then I recommend changing item sizes and LBE stats in XML Editor.

...and welcome to the Pit.

Hi Arska. There is a simple and quick solution/"cheat" for your problem:
Open the map editor and edit the starting sector A9! You can simply add a crate somewhere which contains a full set of good* LBE. After you're done with editing, save the map and start a new game.

*e.g. Russian 106 vest and Tac 3d pack can be cosidered quite good, since they've got lots of space.

If this actually bothers you enough, you could also learn to use the XML Editor to edit the default NIV items so they have more and less restricting pockets - thus removing the need for additional LBE altogether.

Thanks for all the advice. I went with JAsmine's solution now at first. This way I don't break the game mechanics more than I need to. Ok, now to a new game! Smile

Editing the map is a good idea that works for more than just LBE.

Modding is rewarding but tough and the .ini file is overwhelming so this is what I do when I want that one item without mucking with an .ini file or Ctrl GABBI and Alt W cheating, edit the map. Sometimes you just want to play with a certain gun or equipment or try out new mechanics early like sandbags or clothes.

Editing the map is modding, really, anyway.

It is fun to mess with LBE and you quickly get used to it. Different mods implement it differently but plain 1.13 is fine. You can get more from Bobby Ray or enemy drops by the time you need it and you really feel like a ragtag merc group when your equipment is mix and match.

If you have an up-to-date exe, you can simply spawn any item you want by pressing 'Alt' + '.'. Simply enter the itemnumber, and it will spawn. 'Ctrl' + 'Alt' + '.' spawns the same item again. Only works in cheat mode though.

Is there somewhere a list of the items with their numbers? I know they're available from the xml's, but it's an arduous process... I'm a lazy git, and I'd rather not go through them if there's already a list somewhere. Smile
Also, are all the items in the items.xml file, or are there some in the other files?

..\JA2\Data-1.13\TableData\Items/items.xml

Use ctrl-f.

Also dont forget that wearing big backpacks (ARUC, TEAMS, or MALICE3 backpack) reduces your AP for quite a bit and does not allow you to climb on roofs.

This is a must when entering hostile sector:

SHIFT + B In Tactical Map, Drop backpacks for all mercs in the current sector (NewInv mode only).

This you do after the battle:

CTRL + SHIFT + F In Tactical Map, Pickup all dropped backpacks (NewInv mode only), then automatically perform both SHIFT + F and SHIFT + S hotkeys.

Items.xml is the master file, if it ain't in there, it isn't in the game.

Thanks, guess I'll have to make a list myself. (unless someone feels like tackling on a savegame inventory editor, for which I would be very grateful Very Happy )

Hm, I never bothered dropping the backpacks... only when I needed to climb on a roof.
I know of the other shortcuts, and use them all the time, I like nice and orderly sector inventories. Smile (I also do the shift-m, so all the stuff is brought to the center of the sector, makes it harder for enemies to take stuff if they invade)

OK, I tried not being lazy for once, and made a txt file of the items as of (as the exe claims) rev. 5521 (which is puzzling a bit, as I got the 6187 version).

So, how would I go about posting it here? Just paste it in a reply, and put it behind spoiler tags?

Rev. of exe is counted separately from ver. of game dir. For items game dir is important, so better name it "6187".

Good explanation, but dropped it right at the end Razz
I'm too lazy to look it up, but the game dir is around 1800+/-100

Hmm, how does food work with the ALT-. code? It can be reached with ALT-W, but it's not in the main items file.

*facepalm* of course, I was looking at the wrong items.xml file, I had one in the TableData folder, so I didn't bother to check the items subfolder. Thanks for your patience, I'll be sure to abuse it further once I get stuck somewhere again.

... why are there so many Claymores and Tripwires in there? Smile

The mapeditor needs one for each direction/network layer
