Hello all

the contract for the DSL connection where the SVN server is currently located will end soon so we need to think about moving the SVN Server to another location. I thought about a dedicated server or a cloud server, but those are not free. Another possibility is some free SVN server like Google Code. It's free for open source projects, but I'm not sure about the licensing. There is also probably a problem with a repository size.

What do we need: a root or cloud server where we can install Apache and SVN or an SVN hosting service with about a 20 GB space and fast unlimited Internet connection, or
a free SVN server with at least 10GB space for one repository (main repository is now about 6 GB), Google Code has a limit of 4GB.

So do you have any suggestions?

Greetings
Lalien

Well, as I have absolutely no knowledge on setting up servers and the differences in speed etc. ... what would the first alternative cost? And what would, very roughly, be the speed differences?

Rather sure this is not going to help the size issue, but I haven't uploaded to the UC-1.13 SVN in a while. That can be deleted right now if it actually does help with the size issue, or makes the transition easier.

As the terms of the JA2 source code release are not open source (broadly how is it classed?), licensing concerns with Google Code probably apply to Source Forge as well I'm guessing?

The offers for a root server are starting from about 20 euros/month, for a virtual server from 5 euro/month.
The speed difference will be at least 10 times faster transfer rate than we have now (we have only 1 megabit upload by now, most providers offer a 10/50/100 megabit connection).

The UC repository is quite small it will make almost no difference.
By the way, deleting something from the repository will not reduce it size, so don't do it, it will not help in any way.

Yes, the Source Forge will have the same licensing issues as Google Code.
Do we have someone in the forums who can help us with this licensing problem?

Well anything regarding the JA2 source code, the license isnt exactly a GPL or similar open source but simply said the code is free to use and modify as long as there is no financial gain.

It should be no big problem to get this hosted on any free open source hosting location like GitHub maybe?

As we already discussed in irc, all these svn/git code-hosting solutions have limitations regarding theire storage size - uploading the whole project won't be possible. So either we seperate the code and file base or we should seriously watch out for a (virtual) Server solution.

@lalienxx the things im interested about is the average number of file-access/transfers and bandwidth load per day.

In case we decide we need a root server, we obiously need to pay for it. Has this already been done in the past in this community (collecting money for stuff)? I'd be willing to offer some, but sure as hell not all Smile

Hello Lalien,

Maybe it's worth a try to get in contact with the Polish people from Jagged Alliance Center? As far as I know the member lukasamd is the administrator there and he is also registered in this forum.

Hello,
I wrote to ja2v113.pbwiki.com admins in this matter, but didn't get any reply.

We have good server in JACenter.pl - about 9 GB of disk space and 250 GB monthly transfer.
We can't make use of it - we use ~3 GB space and only 50-60 GB transfer per month...

So, maybe we should create polish mirror with JA2 1.13 packages?
It isn't any problem for us and people will not must use uncomfortable rapidshare mirror Wink

What do you think about this idea?

I know it has been a while (over three years now) where lukasamd wrote that, but the site: http://jagged-alliance.pl/ still exist and as far as I can see (I don't speak Polish btw Wink) he is even active in the Polish forum.

Good luck!

Best regards; Schein

The code and file base are two different repositories. The main code repository has not only code in it but many other things like tools and data files. I'm not sure there is a way to separate them.

Now to bandwidth:
we've got in past 7 months the total traffic of 775GB

Mar-Oct
Total Total Sent Total Received
775.0G 756.7G 18.3G

last month
Total Total Sent Total Received
166.5G 162.8G 3.7G

Hello all,

here the news:

I've tried to move our projects to the Google Code. It worked well for all smaller projects, but not for the main repository. The guys were very kind and gave me two gigabytes more space than standard, but it's still not enough, I can't upload the whole repository. Looks like the free services are not suitable for us.

@Acces: Can you try to install SVN on your server and sync it with the current one? The repository takes currently about 6 gigabyte space on the disk.

We should also check the possibility to get an own root or virtual server for the project. A virtual server will cost at least 10 euros a month, a root server 30 euros.
Is anyone ready to donate money for this?

Greetings
Lalien

I have some issues (ssl related) with the import of the actual repository, so i wrote lalienxx a pn - but he hasn't answered yet.

Nevertheless i wanna try out launchpad first. As far as i can see they have no restrictions.

Hey guys.

short status report: i can't import the repository data neither on my server nor on launchpad. I contacted lalinex some time ago, but he seems to be busy. A manual upload with my slow internet connection (64kb/s upstream) is not an option.

I won't be available for some time, so it might be that somebody else have to pick up this case. Sorry for that.

Hey,

the new server is now up and running. I've set up a virtual server wit a fast Internet connection and a lot of space. It costs 10 euros a month. If anyone likes to help you can send money over PayPal to ja2svn[@]gmail.com or contact me if you prefer to make a bank transfer.

Greetings
Lalien
