Once I drop backpacks in combat, it is easy to forget to pick them back up again. Some onscreen indication, maybe a letter "B" or icon on the portrait, to remind us that that mercenary dropped it. Picking up is just a hotkey, I know, but that doesn't mean it isn't easy to forget, or that an indicator isn't a good idea.

I know the game keeps track of this flag already (for the "pick up pack" hotkey to function) so adding a visual indicator doesn't seem like a chore to implement, but I can't do it! I have no skills like that.

This sometimes happens to me when I defeat a few enemies and am not interested in scraping through the sector inventory. I reload (or not) my guns and move on, but forget the packs!

I don't mind micromanagement but it requires good GUI feedback and indicators.

Perhaps giving the backpack slot symbol (or the drop/pickup button in tactical) a different colour once the backpack has been dropped?

Or maybe a warning if you leave a sector with dropped backpacks. Something like:

"You are leaving a sector without picking your backpacks. Do you wish to move anyway?

1) Yes

2) No

3) Pick backpacks and move on"

Or maybe an option in the .ini for automatically retrieve your backpack when leaving a sector

Possibly an .ini setting that can modify this behavior. For example AUTOMATIC_BACKPACK_MANAGEMENT =
0 can be no management, player drops and collects packs manually with hotkeys or interface buttons as we do now
1 can be to automatically pick up packs after sector is cleared
2 can be to drop at the start of turn based combat and then pick them up automatically after sector is cleared

But an onscreen indicator in any event is a good idea to let the player know he's got backpacks on the ground in the sector.

Sort of.

PEBKAC = Problem exists between keyboard and chair.

SCNR = Sorry, could not resist (to make this remark intended to be funny but somehow off topic and not helpful)

I do play tired. Can we also add a coffee system? I'd forget less.

I'm not against this but usually having a habit of pressing shift+ctrl+f helps as well. Shortcut unloads all weapons in sector, removes all attachments from them (if specified in .ini) and takes back all dropped backpacks to their owners. One shortcut to rule them all.

Ctrl+Shift+f not working for backpack if battle in the end was resolved automatically not in tactical.Plus dropped items from enemy not revealed by player merc will be not revealed if battle ended via autoresolve.

So?
Inventory icon won't work there either. So don't use autoresolve.

I just got that pic, too, from SHOT show coverage. You beat me back to my own thread to post that! You going to get one? I'm putting a tactical light and laser on mine and then my bedside coffee cup becomes a better weapon.
