Recently I started playing an interesting style of game which i just call 'Permadeath'. I only play on 'experienced' difficulty level and give myself 500,000 starting cash., Using the Alruco folding-stock mod (AFS).

That must sound incredibly unchallanging but i play the game with no saving or reloading whatsoever (except for CTD) which means whoever dies, is dead. You only get once chance to do everything and must live and deal with the consequenses of your decisions (accidents and freak random occurences too) just like real life. Its a really exciting way the play the game and means playing as thoughtfully and tactically as possible. Every move counts.

I started with 14 mercs in total and lost my first 2 (Lucky and an IMP) during the Chitzena 60-man counter-attack. Taken 2 mines and have got 100k left to replace losses and buy equipment to keep my mercs ahead of the enemy weapons progression, Without the advantage in firepower casulties would certainly become too severe to sustain.

Anyone else played this way?

I've tried to play Iron Man style but there are just a few legitimate and largely important reasons not to. Some battles can get quite long with the massive counter-attacks and sometimes I just have to step away for whatever reason. The game likes to crash a lot when it is least convenient. That said, I try to save scum as little as I can. It definitely adds more excitement and character to the game when those setbacks occur and you overcome them. But, still, I sometimes do reload when crazy things happen in my games (What can I say? I get attached to some of my mercs).

I feel like the 500k starting cash is excessive, especially only at the experienced difficulty. I would say at least Expert for that kind of playstyle (maybe even Insane for ultimate challenge but on Ironman that could be brutal). It is definitely always more exciting living with those setbacks that happen during play. It makes the game feel that much more real and exciting when something goes wrong and you just work around it instead of hitting the quick load button.

I'd like to do a challenge where you only play with one, maybe 2, IMP mercs and from there you just work with the RPC mercenaries you find in Arulco, no AIM or MERC recruiting. It would be disastrous if you lose a merc since there aren't a huge amount of them but there is definitely enough to make a sizeable team with some work. That's the great thing about 1.13 and even vanilla JA2 you can come up with your own challenges if you want.

I play no reload style games exclusively. Settings vary but currently I'm playing with the following on the latest SVN build:

INI
Standard starting cash
Dynamic IMP cost ON
Drassen Counterattack OFF
Aggressive AI (all city) counterattacks OFF
dirt system OFF (cool but tedious)
Advanced Repair system ON
Custom IMPitemchoices that gives overall less goodies and a random MP instead of one based on MRK
--Leaving pretty much everything else as is

Game settings
Experienced/Expert Difficulty Level
NCTH OFF
Slow weapon progression
Sci-Fi
Tons o Guns
Normal (1) Bobby ray's settings
Weapon overheating

I usually end up starting with either one or two IMPs and building a four man squad around that (Ira makes five I guess)

Playing Ironman is a bit risky, because you never know what can happen, if game suddenly crashes or you have to go somewhere urgently and other things...so i prefer saving each 3-5 turns and reload as less as i can

Yeah I don't play on iron man either, especially since I'm playing in Beta with several mods. I save often in case of bugs but just don't reload unless one pops up. I really have to police myself on it but having that personal rule (I play most rpg / strategy games this way)makes the game more interesting for me.

Consequently I end up restarting the game a lot in the early stages but long term I find it way more fun and challenging.

'Self imposed' ironman style is the best way to play IMHO. Of course, if you have willpower (and ppl who still play this old gem usually do) you can save as ofter as you feel like, but don't use reload no matter what. Having your mercs killed, or being forced to retreat and regroup becomes normal part of the game and I just love it.

Ironman option is indeed risky, even more so if you don't use stable release and go for latest beta's.
