surely when the ammo is not in the gun then there'll be room on the inventory display for HP or AP to be visible. And just like you can click on a gun in inventory and it opens up a display where you can read about the gun or else slap on accessories, similarly clicking on that magazine in your inventory that mysteriously states 9mm HP in blue will open up some sort of information on it.
I do hope that shotgun ammo is designed to match the color. For buckshot, have the name be in blue, but for the picture of the shells have the entire shell body (the hull) be blue. For regular shotgun rounds a grey hull. For AP red.
Note that done properly done shotgun ammo wouldn't exactly follow the tenets of regular vs HP vs AP. Generally HP does more damage but punches through armor less effectively, and AP is the opposite.
For shotguns regular ammo is regular ammo. Buckshot increases damage AND increases range slightly...and has no special armor rules. Slugs do the same damage as regular ammo but increase range moderately (and no spread effec.) Fletchette would be AP ammo and do regular damage. (No matter how great Fletchets sound, they tend to not act as effectively as buckshot on non-armored targets).
Side note, in case you are wondering all that 'specialty' stuff like shotgun shells loaded with a short chain, razor blades, hooks, etc etc NEVER works as well as buckshot.
