For no apparent reason my mercenaries frequently start walking backwards and sideways and very slowly, running is no longer possible. After a reload they'll walk normally again.

Any idea what that is about?

 TheAnyKey - the ALT key
have the same problem in Win7 after switching with ALT-TAB

 Basically every time you alt+tab out of the game, the alt key is ''stuck'' in the game. Just press it to resolve that issue, It's ingrained in my head to press alt after going back into the game window.

Selling my favourite guns taught me that >.<

or when you alt tab out of the game just don't release the alt key until you return to the game.
