Recently been on an 'old-school' rpg binge, which included the discovery of Temple of Elemental Evil, and finally making use of Jagged Alliance 2, which I purchased on GOG a long time ago.

I have to confess, my first introduction to this 'genre' was a game that is probably blasphemy (?) "Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge." At the time I played it, I enjoyed it very much, though the lack of any community surrounding it and the lack of ANY studio legacy for the product was also disappointing.

Evidently this game was an 'unauthorized' clone by a Russian design studio? If nothing else it was quite clearly 'inspired' by Jagged Alliance.

When I first started JA2, I just couldn't get into it at the time. Graphics seemed very crude compared to Hired Guns; and I suppose realistically, they are a bit more crude. Not to say that graphical sophistication is the ultimate determinant of a games merits; but sometimes you just can't get into it.

I don't know what prompted me to finally go back and fire it up, but having 'got past' that little silly turn off from the graphics I have become a lover of this game. It is a clever, humorous, fun, engaging, thought-provoking, edifying tactical rpg, and v1.13 mod multiplies all of those strengths enormously.

So, I just wanted to say thank you to this whole community!

Yes, "Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge" was developed by russian team.
It was supposed to be JA3, with improved gameplay but failed in that (except maybe for visual appearance) ROFL

Don't know why, but personally i don't like modern 3d engines for tactic/strategic turnbased games. They just don't look good for me :whoknows:

It definitely took some getting used to. But I did have a lot of fun with the game. Never quite beat the whole map but did get at least 75% or so through it.

Have to say, overall JA2 is a better game Smile and JA2 v1.13 is amazing!

Yea, that was another classic case of a studio starting to work on JA3 and failing to deliver. They tried to release the game as JAZZ, counting on the fact that Russian Z looks a lot like number 3 (so game looked like it was named like JA33). Finally they released it as Hired Guns. Not bad, but had some annoying bugs and lacked any RPG depth as any JA game should have.

Welcome to community!

Well, that's another mystery solved then. I always wondered 'why the hell jazz?' Smile

If any of you guys have not played Hired Guns: Jagged Edge, I do recommend it.

I have not tried to play it on Win 7 or 8, but it went fine on my old XP system. It is a different beast than JA2 that is for sure, but if you give yourself a few hours just to get a feel for it, you'll see it is very, VERY similar. Nice game. Reminded me of chess except with shotguns and assault rifles.
