After reading about the game here in another thread I set off to locate the game. Pretty hard to find, maybe the death of a kitten was needed to help me locate.

Took me days to get it to run, all I had was a guy in underpants and no one else to be seen. Then upon searching my copy I found 1.9 and 1.10 patches. The graphic settings were hard to find, almost gave up on them till putting
"The Fall Einstellungen" into the search bar, then the settings pop up and I can play 1600 x 1050.
Found a walk through here,

Now to try out the game

That is a pretty nice looking game. If you are keen to try yet another in roughly the same vein:

Hired Guns the Jagged Edge, sold by Matrix Games only I think. The price point on pretty much all of their games is insanely high relative to the rest of the market, but I was happy with it, even though I probably paid $50 for it when it came out rather than the $30 they are asking now.

Had some good times with that one before I discovered JA2. I wouldn't say it is as good as JA2, but a fun game. If it was $10 or less it would be a nobrainer; although one caveat: not sure how it does on Win 7. I only ever played it on XP.

I played The Fall long time ago. Was a nice game. There even are some mods for it and everyone can mod this to a certain degree.

There is a modding documentation here:
http://www.the-fall.de/mods/

The most interesting mod for me was an XP mod that distributes experience evenly among all mercs. The default game behaviour was to only distribute quests XP which was a problem when it was always one of your mercs to finish opponents...

Somewhere around there is an English translation mod for Last Days, makes it a real good game . Lots of features and things to do . Well worth picking up cheaply .

before "the Fall" was done the devs registered at the Basis and asked for ideas/help/suggestions

that is the reason why it has quite some JA and Fall out in it.

there are various "Projekt P" threads.

Projekt P = the Fall

I did play "The Fall: Last Days of Gaia" years ago. It was basically Skyrim in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Without free roaming, which sucked.

But the map editor looked very nice (and crashed a lot).
And the scripting was so easily modifiable. I liked especially the fact that item creation was editable so you could in theory create a lot of new items by combines.

Nowdays you have FO3 and Skyrim and a lot of post-apoc MMOs (Dayz, Rust, etc) that The Fall is a closed subject. But it has a nice place in the history.

An xp mod sounds good, how would that be done?
Game dont seem too bad so far, I will see.
I find now I dont finish many games, I get bored or find them not fun after a while.

I'm really astonished by the elogious comments here. I bought this game when it came out and played it to the end. At this time it seemed to me a real scam. It was really bad, extremely bugged, and very deceitful. It had a few good ideas, yes, but none of them exploited properly.
This game came after such good hits (from wich it tried to pull audience), it felt bad and usurpating to me.
Maybe time and mods could change my mind, now, but i don't have the will to face that game again.

Here are some mods that I still have:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/psckm3rtahp4h53/TheFallMods.zip

This includes:
- XP mod
- more silent car engines
- Pan Cleaning Mod 0.2
- Rest with higher chance for ambush
- faster updating merchant inventory

All .py script files have to be put into a "scripts" folder that you have to create inside your "TheFall" folder. The game will then use these scripts instead of the ones in the "scripts.ubn" archive.

I do not support these mods so don't even ask.

edit:
@Grim
I got this game quite some time after it had been released so I was able to play with patch 1.9 or 1.10 from the start (don't remember exactly). I didn't notice more bugs than other games. There are a few design issues, some of them can be fixed with mods. Maybe your experience was so bad because you played the original version without patches?

That's probably it. I picked up the 'Reloaded' version (aka 1.10) on a whim in a big electronic store and can't remember an unusual level of bugginess either. Reminds me that I should finish it some time ...

Thanks for mods, very kind of you my friend Smile

Combat is frustrating at times, my guys will leave cover to shoot or even fist fight when gun runs out of ammo. As far as graphics go the game looks pretty good. Driving is a pain, Humvee gets stuck on anything and takes damage.

IIRC there is a combat menu where you can set combat speed and pause events and define if your mercs will move to get in range or if they will hold position.
