For me its the mortar, ever since i first started playing Jagged Alliance i loved the possibility to kill so many enemies from safety

In the early and mid game I love to give as many of my guys a sawn-off shotgun with buckshot. The reason for that is that in the new releases you can use ''burst'' (both barrels) to shoot, making it an extremely deadly close-range panic gun to litter your enemy with two full buckshot rounds.
Adding to that, Buckshot/Slugs are very very cheap ammo types so you can buy a bunch of boxes off of Tony for next to nothing.
Of course, later in the game the enemies get fancy armor and your buckshot is going to be useless, but you could always use your then gained riches to buy boxes of fancy ammo like flashbang shells and smoke shells to use the shotty as a support weapon...
And when you get into the late part of the game, you'll have all the fancy smancy superguns like the P90 with armor-chewers, and so on...
But I love the sawn off shotgun, it just has that very cool ''outlaw'' appeal, and shooting a double shot of buckshot into a guys face never gets old.

Alright, I firmly believe the Robarms XCR-1 is the best assault rifle in the game. It's got the range, damage and accuracy of the FAL OSW and the auto/burst-fire controllability of lighter 5.56/5.45 ARs, and as a bonus it takes less APs to ready/fire than the FAL, quite a chunk more than the TAR but it's well worth it for the extra damage. Granted, I am using the trigger group but even on auto it performs well with short bursts. Average hit rate is around 35%, not counting Shank who I just use for (ineffective) suppressive fire. One more thing I really like about it is 25-round mags, which means the ammo boxes divide up real nicely, no more having to sort half-full mags out of a pile.

Any pistol with 8+ mag capacity and high stopping power, yet not too damn large.
My favourite pistols are the Five-seveN because of its armour penetration, generally good stats and the Hi-Cap M1911 for the same reason, AET ammo is pretty much necessary on it once you start encountering armoured enemies though.

My favorite weapons are always the most effective weapons. For Build 7609 and several compared parameters they are:
Melee, Knife
KCB Knife. It cuts through fences, wire and flesh. A standard-issue knife for every merc in my team.
Utility Knife is for Technician. It is used to disassemble and for lock-picking.
Handgun, Machine pistol
Stechkin APS. Uses 9*18 ammo (you'll have your ammo replenished free of charge after each battle), small (fits into small pistol holster, if no silencer is used), 20 rounds in magazine, automatic fire, long range, low AP cost. Has weight of only 1 kg.
Absolute leader for handguns is actually FN Five-seveN, but you'll be counting your every shot due to deficit of 5.7x28mm ammo. And this ammo type is also insanely expensive. So my pistol of choice as sidearm for every merc in my teams is Stechkin APS.
Submachine gun
AEK-919K "Kashtan", only thanks to 9x18mm ammo.
Absolute leader is in fact Magpul PDR-D (range, accuracy, damage, low AP cost). But it uses 6x35mm (rare and expensive). Second best is FN P90, but 5.7x28mm ammo (rare and expensive).
Assault rifle
XM-8 Sharpshooter. Uses 5.56x45mm (laying around in piles after each battle). It has range, accuracy, low weight. But average AP cost. And coolness is 9 (available late in game).
Second best is Diemaco C7A2. Same reasons, but slightly more weight and AP cost. Though almost twice as cheap as XM-8 Sharpshooter. And coolness is 5 (available sooner in game).
Third best is FN SCAR-L SV, as it beats Diemaco C7A2 in range, but looses in weight and price.
Machine gun
It would be ideal logistics-wise to use same type of ammo for LMG as for AR. But 5.56x45mm lacks range. And LMG must be beyond reach of AR to provide effective pin-down fire. Therefore...
The best is HK 21E with 7.62x51mm (relatively cheap and widespread). It has range, accuracy, damage, low AP cost, many attachment slots, average weight.
Second best is Rheinmetall MG3. Yes, Maschinengewehr 42 still beats the crap out of them.
Third best (and first best among 5.56x45mm ammo) is HK MG43. It uses 5.56x45mm ammo, good range, accuracy and damage, low weight, low AP cost (and one of lowest Ready Time AP cost).
Sniper rifle
It would be ideal logistics-wise to use same type of ammo for SR as for LMG.
So second-best is CZ 700 using 7.62x51mm ammo. It has Coolness=8, good range, accuracy and damage, 10 rounds magazine, semi-auto, low AP cost.
But first best of all is DSR-1 using .338 Lapua ammo. It has it all-round best: range, accuracy and damage, 10 rounds magazine, semi-auto, low AP cost, low weight. Of course, there are bigger 12 mm rifles, but they just can't compete in effectiveness (gained result versus spent resources) with DSR-1.
*AP cost = [Ready Time] + [APs to Attack] + [APs to Burst] (where applicable) + [APs to Autofire] (where applicable) + [APs To Reload] + [APs To Reload Manually].
*Shotguns cannot be considered serious combat equipment.
*I've opted out of using SMGs as a weapon for my team. I've adjusted game settings so I have Bobby Ray sell assault rifles ASAP, and I have Stechkin APS with auto-fire as sidearm.
*Rifles are inferior to assault rifles so I don't use them as standard weapons. I give trophy SKS to my sniper as SKS gets into game early, before I save enough money to buy guns specified above.
I haven't started comparing grenade launchers and mortars yet.

Then there's Vinny to say "Yo, a losers convention." and provide suppression support should the enemy sneak up behind us.
