Hi! I figured you guys would be the best resource for help with editing STI files.

I use STI-Edit to make animated portraits for Wizardry 8.

The "medium" sized portraits work perfectly in STI-Edit.

What I am trying to figure out is how to use STI-Edit to also change the "small" and "large" portraits.

I know that there is a separate utility for L&S portraits for PCs, but I also want to be able to redo NPC portraits. Plus it would be more elegant to work directly with the STI files at all three levels.

Any questions, suggestions, or advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

No idea at all, never played it - but what is stopping you from editing those other pictures? Different file format?

Yeah, well they're all .sti files, but for some reason the "large" and "small" files don't seem to import properly into STI-edit, so I can't paste other image information onto them.

With the "medium" files, the sti opens properly and I can then change the palette and paste clipboard information from a .tga with the same dimensions into it, then save the new file and it works.

Thanks for the interest Flugente Smile

Hmm. The STI editor is a terrible tool, indeed, perhaps this is just an editor error?

I don't do image stuff a lot, but when the editor fails, I use GRV (from The JA2 modding tool section of Scheinworld's stuff to add images. Perhaps that helps?

Alternatively, Tox recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for a new STI editor, perhaps this would be more helpful.

Thanks Flugente! I had heard of GRV but wasn't able to find it until you linked it. It seems to have solved the problem!

Thanks again! Z

I'm guessing that's a higher bit-depth image that's screwing up in Sti edit, going by the palette colours. Sti edit generally can't handle larger images with high colour bit-depth. Check your palette or create a new one.

As Fluguente mentions, GRV can handle these better, but it's not an art editing tool, more of an asset viewer.

Best thing is to use your chosen art program and then cut and paste assets into Sti Edit, or GRV (You will have to use GRV for higher res pics)
