Hey guys, why so little action here in the JA:F forum?

You know, FC is releasing content and bugfixing patches continously and each one adds crucial features missing in the initial release.

Right now with version 1.06 we have a LOT more lootable containers and a working shop interface, so buying and selling is now much more comfortable and sensible.

Also different ammo types have been added and shotguns now work as intended (they have pellet spread).

Is anybody here still playtesting or are you all just waiting for the final patch before daring to play?

I for one am waiting for them to wrap up the weapon changes with the attachments patch and re-enable modding + editor. Then I plan to do a new playthrough and get the whole modding ball rolling.

The new shop is great, but in my head, in the grand scheme of things, is just a small step towards what JA:F can be.

Yeah, that's what i was thinking Shanga.

Basically, everyone is just waiting for FC to complete the game and add the essential features before anyone bothers to start playing. Too few here willing to play beta testers for FC anymore.

JA:F simply is still pretty much in development despite being released. There's simply little to do or talk about for most people at the current stage of things.

On the other hand, i am quite sure you got everything covered and will be the first to notify us if anything worthwhile comes up. As always, we all depend on you Shanga-sensei!

I've completed the initial game a few times already, I am itching to make new stuff with the editor and most important, have a way to publish the damn mods safely on Steam Workshop. As promised my first mod will be a free weapons mod, but can't do that without taking attachments into account. And in general having a stable build.

Ran into some obnoxious bugs last I played some weeks ago. Stuff like loot piles getting duped/erased whenever I was multitasking loot scrounging. Made me back off.
Figure I'll get back to it in a few months.

I'm playing every day and can't stop. For me, I skipped EVERY JA game since JA2 and came to JA:F while I stumbled upon BP during an nostalgic play some month ago. So I "missed" the whole Alpha/Beta phase of the game - from my point of view it's fun already and for me there is no reason to rush ... I just sit back and stay in touch hehe

And btw: I smiled as I stood in front of the BP sign in JA:F - had to take a screenshot imidiately Wink

Once the holiday rush is over and the attachment patch and all are in I want to do another live playthrough on Twitch and get a fresh bite of the game myself. It's not that I haven't played JA:F lately, I have played nothing else between finishing jobs and running amok to buy everyone presents for Christmas (my kid has a loooong list, I tell you).

On some level the apathy is surprising, IMO. Perhaps it shouldn't be as that is what I feel. Still, I thought the more hardcore would be up in arms.

I contributed to the kickstarter to support the franchise, not because I expected anything from the game. Still, what I hear doesn't even meet those low expectations. Game seems to have sold terribly, too. Not expecting it to have much of a turn-around Sad

Not true, Decado. The game was bashed viciously because that's Steam for you. They don't fucking care about reasons or reason, they want AAA quality for indie dollar and they want it NOW. Because everything in their life costs $1 and is made out of solid gold.

The biggest mistake FC did was start a project for a kit-game on KS, with a crowd that pretty much understood and communicated well with them, then move the whole show to Steam EA where everyone talks but nobody listens. Of course nobody bought their explanation of what budget was, what JAF was meant to be from start and what it wasn't.

It was purely a kamikaze dive which failed miserably.

But the game itself, half-baked to the general public as it appears, has some precious core elements that basically is what you'd want if you were thinking of porting JA universe to a modern engine like Unity.

My perspective on the whole thing is not that I have backed FC to make a new JA game. I see the whole KS as the community hiring them to port JA elements to Unity. As many as they could. And they did port A LOT OF THE CORE: turn-based fights, weapons and CTH, cover, mercs, external JSON files, etc. So from my perspective, speaking from the standpoint of Bear's Pit as a community of modders, I am satisfied with what they did. Of course, there are still grey areas and stuff to be added, but lets say a solid 2/3 of the hardest part of the conversion is done.

It took them 1 year to do it. To most of people the costs were below $100. Considering the two years we spent trying to make Stable Modding Platform (and failed), I say a 2/3 Unity port is a awesome thing to have. Furthermore, FC are a great bunch of guys, on personal level, so they will both continue to work for 3/3 and - most important - financially reward anyone who helps them achieve this goal.

For Bear's Pit, that's a homerun.

I understand what you mean, but the game is supposed to be "finished". It seems anything but. Of course it will be poorly received. The larger concern now is funding. The game doesn't appear to have sold even decently. If the budget was so tight they couldn't come close to completing development before release, how much longer can they continue?

The perception of "finished" varies on what everyone expects. The core campaign is sketchy, but it's playable from day 1 to end mission. There's a lack of immersion, yea, due to low-budget story-telling they picked, but that doesn't mean game isn't finished. There is content being added post-release, but give me one game that's complete on release nowdays and I'll eat it, DVD cover and all.

Concerning funding, I think we're safe to assume they have enough funds to keep a core team on JA:F in order to deliver what they've promised. Maybe not at the speed we would love to (yesterday?) but they will.

Why I am so confident? Because from my talks with Thomas Lund he's the first to realize that if this game has a chance to survive, that chance comes from community getting involved in the content creation. Both in terms of PR and in therms of actual gameplay extension and appeal.

Well, the reason I've been silent was I've been playing the game and having a great time with it too.
Is it perfect? No.
But, considering I never thought it would hit it's kickstarter goal (I didn't pledge) and even once it did, I never thought they'd come close to hitting their release date. I bought it the day it went gold on steam. I'd been itching to pull the trigger, but waited. I wanted a finished product.
Is it perfect? No.
But, in my humble opinion it's the best damned turned-based, tactical-squad combat game that I've played since I've played Jagged Alliance.

Oh, and by-the-fucking-way it's Jagged Alliance! Smile

PS: MY apologies in advance, since we live in this strange new world, where your rants may come back to bite you in the ass. Smile

I'm looking forward to getting this game... Right now, money is a little tight, so I'll probably pick it up when it's cheap. ...by cheap I mean $6-$8. By that time I assume the majority of the quirks will be worked out.

Yeah, that may take a while though. Also, with such a bargain you will not exactly help the devs a lot with staying in the business and collecting funds to improve the game or work on a proper successor.
And don't forget, this sommunity needs Full Control support if we are going to make the paid modding content plan of Shanga work somehow.

But tbh, seeing how the game turned out, I'd probably only be willing to pay no more than 20 bucks for it myself as it is now. I think 15 - 20 Euro is a fair price for the delivered quality and content.
And honestly, nobody should ever pay more than 20 bucks for a videogame EVER.

Yeah, hindsight is a bitch, right? Although to be fair, that money was more of an advance business investment, which crowd funding just is. We didn't as much buy the game with that money, as much as funding its development, with the finished game being more of a byproduct. And at least we DID get our promised product, even if it wasn't quite up to our expectations. But we always knew the risks from the very start and we knew how limited the crowdfunded funds were for a quality title.

But all that is water down the river and personally, i regret nothing. It was my first and only crowdfunding experience so far and it went okay. Moving on!

The fact that you considered investing more than $25 is commendable. But what you paid for above that was actually beta access and the t-shirt and the rest of the goodies. If those perks were worth the extra cash, it's only up to you to judge, but that's what you paid for the extra $75. And, of course, to help the game being made (I am pretty sure you had enough Tshirts at home).

Problem was though this game didn't sell to the masses like W2, for example, who racked 37k backers for the $15 tier and 9k backers for $30 tier. JA:F raised about 100k from the "mass sales", while W2 raised 800k. That's where the funding failed. Because BIA, because small community, because low dev profile, because badly made KS campaign, because lack of demo, because every reason in this world. That's the harsh truth everyone needs to consider when judging what they got. It was clear the day the KS ended (even before) that this game will never compare to W2 and likes. And this is why FC deserves a lot more slack than they get - despite the piss poor budget the community provided, they actually managed to produce a decent little game. At least in the same amount as they deserve being slapped around for not listening to all the testers who told them NOT TO RELEASE in October.

To those who say "I don't care about budget, I paid for a full game", I recommend to contact someone in gaming dev industry, show them the wishlists for JAF and ask them if they would make you that game for $350k... see what they answer. It's about time everyone chills down a bit and thinks hard about what can be done with this game. I for one think it's worth saving and developing into something great. If a few positive reviews on Steam will make FC feel better and keep the communication lines open, give them the g'damned reviews. We're past the point of the "I told you so", we're very close to the "to be or not to be" point...
