I have played about 20% to 25% of the game. Can't really cope with family life, professional life, finishing my last NWN2 mod, JAF, DS and W2
How can you be so productive by the way? JAF mods, scenario ideas ...
Basically I think you need to distribute all skills among your 4 main characters as much as possible. Because you somehow need all. Some additional companions may help though, but consider them as non permanent, you never know ...
I haven't had that much trouble to find ammo, as I was able to open many containers (lock-pick, tumbler, science). Disarm trap is a must too.
Spend a few points in handguns, SMG or melee for a ranged weapon specialist in case they come close. AR may prove more effective than sniper rifle, IMO. Only one sniper rifle equipped member in the team is ok. The sniper is a good asset to start a fight at long range and let they come, your party being in position. Have them forming a firing line in order to mitigate friendly fire risk. Use also the cover positions when available. Don't rely on what you know but on specific information when you mouse over the cover positions.
AP are rather important for melee, AR, SMG, and handguns. It can make one shot, one burst or one blow more!
When they are close, use melee if possible in order to spare ammo.
Don't shoot when the odds are iffy. Use overwatch instead.
Shotguns are ok and HMG nice but in the hands of a permanent character. OTW beware of friendly fire! Beware also on friendly fire when you are using overwatch with a shotgun or a HMG in hands.
In order to spare ammo run fast along mutated vegetables. You will be out of range when they explode. Or just avoid them. Shoot only the blocking ones.
Grenades and dynamite are very effective against a mob.
If you have elected to go to the agro center first you are are going to find a skilled scientist soon.
In the very first area you can immediately recruit a companion. She's really of great help at early game and has an AR. AR have enough range to engage a fight at rather long range.
Melee only guys soon become mules, because you gonna encounter well equipped foes sooner or later.

Well Shanga, i assume you play with the newest patch?
Anyways, first of all, you will not be able to sufficiently train all your 4 core guys in all relevant abilities without cheating.
Rather you will have to choose one combat specialization and 2 or max 3 misc specializations per soldier. But don't worry, the rest you will be able to supplement by recruiting new team members along the way.
Concerning combat, first of all, heavy weapons are rather useless. Melee is always very powerful and saves you lots of ammo, but you need a good medic to keep your melee guys alive. Snipers aren't as powerful or useful as one might think, because of the speed with which melee enemies will rush you. Also your Melee guys will need to be as quick as possible to rush ahead and bind the enemies, and need lots of AP to make good use of their weapons.
Also, in the later stages of the game, upgraded assault rifles will have enough range and firepower to rival most sniper rifles, plus they are more flexible and can put out much more damage at any range very effectively. Only restriction may be ammo availability.
SMGs are merely smaller assault rifles with less attachment options, less power and shorter range.
Shotguns are only useful for front line fighters, as their spread hits allies too easily. Only of limited value in certain situations. Also useful as backup weapons for close quarters, with appropriate chokes which focus their blast.
Explosives are our friend. Make liberal use of them to quickly reduce enemy numbers.
Pistols are mainly backup weapons and for support characters. In most encounters, you simply won't be able to close in enough on enemies to bring their full potential to bear. But they are light, as is their ammo, so they are ideal for weaker team members who cannot carry much.
Energy weapons vary wildly in usefulness. Its mostly their increased damage against heavy armor which makes them special. But remember that you will encounter them much more frequently towards the end of the game, which means they will be much more effective against you also, if you wear heavy armor.
Skills: Computer Hacking and Lock picking are highly useful and must haves. They will grant you lots of good stuff. toaster repair will mostly give you special quest items, which can be exchanged for goodies like unique weapons and similar stuff at certain NPCs. Good to have, but not critical, since most things you can get through this aren't really that good.
A good medic is absolutely essential to keep your team in good fighting shape. Make this one of your supporting core members.
Your leader should be mostly a charismatic leader with all the talking skills. They are essential to peacefully resolve many comflicts and situations and get crucial information. Avoiding combat wherever possible is always a good idea.
Explosives disarm is also very useful to have in many situations, as many safes and boxes are booby trapped. Give that to your lockpicking guy.
A high repair skill is also essential to keep your equipment in shape and efficiently harvest attachments and modify weapons. Well tricked out weapons are essential to your combat effectiveness.
Animal whisperer is a very fun skill to have, but not really all that useful most of the time. You can do well without.
Survivalism is important to avoid random encounters whilst travelling on the map.
A high perception is necessary for your scout and scavenger/lockpicker/explosives guy, so he should unite all these qualities.
Strength is someone at least one of your chars should have, best the melee guy.
Alsways make sure, that everyone in your team uses a weapon with a different ammo caliber if possible, so you will be less likely to run out. And always buy all the ammo you can get and carry at any available trader, especially for SMGs and assault rifles. The rest you will find plenty of.
And always try to get your primary weapons skill as high as possible as quickly as possible, so you reliably hit what you are shooting at and do enough damage with it. Will greatly help to conserve ammo.
Any more questions Shanga?
