Now that JA 2 1.13 supports high resolutions, I thought about designing a high resolution main menu background.

1. I've looked through most of the files of the 7609 build but couldn't find any plain picture format files. Do the main menu background files somehow have to be extracted to work on them?

2. Taking into account that the main menu background is supposed to be in a different resolution, are there any code changes to be made to accept the higher resolution?

3. Looking for plain JA 2 material with the Google picture search, I only found low resolution material. Does anybody know where to find higher resolution material e. g. covers, illustrations, logos etc.?

 1. Plain picture format? If you mean anything apart from Sti's you may be out of luck, though sometimes PNG's have been used or PCX's back in the day.

3. For higher res logos you could possibly look at some of the later releases such as JA: Back in Action, there seems to be a few wallpapers out there and promo stuff on the net.

Can anybody point me to where and how I can change a main menu background?

You mean "Data\LoadScreens\MainMenuBackGround.PNG"?

Thank you for pointing out the location.
I just created three black pngs with the correct measurements and naming, replaced them in the folder but the game wouldn't take them.
Do they have to fulfill certain criteria?

The MainMenuBackGround.PNG has a 1024x768 resolution with 24 bits color depth. If you have such file in a higher priority folder like Data-1.13 or a mod folder then this file will take precedence and you'd have to replace that.
