I just finished up a month-long insane ironman session last night. I do this every 1-2 years, and this was definitely my most intense playthrough yet. I was always barely scratching by on money, barely keeping forward progress. Drassen ran out of ore right after the massive defense, and I had to rush Cambria to keep funds going. Boxing also petered out about the same time. I have a self-imposed ban on CTRL+Click selling, so I had to get access to Cambria's store. This is probably the first playthrough ever where I could never afford Bobby Ray's (aside from the first time, to buy Storms).

Great job on the new changes.

Here are some of the issues I ran into during my playthrough:

1)
You can quickload during the enemies' turn. Going into a battle after doing this crashes the game 100% of the time. I'm guessing there's some background thread or other data that isn't cleaned up properly on the quickload.

2)
I very frequently ran into this crash:
.\LuaInitNPCs.cpp Line #2725 LetLuaMyCustomHandleAtNewGridNo ==> Cannot open file: scripts/Overhead.lua
www.dropbox.com/s/znoveesu605h9r0/crash1.png?dl=0

I love insane ironman, but the constant defenses get to be too much sometimes. So in some battles, I'll sit my men near the map's edge where the enemies come in, to get a quick battle. I've done this for a few playthroughs in the past, but this is the first playthrough I've remembered crashes with it. This crash only happens if I get first turn; if the enemy gets first turn, it plays without crashing.

3)
ALT key getting stuck if you ALT+TAB out. The game considers the ALT key pressed when you re-open the game. So, if you press a common hotkey like 'L', you just lost your whole ironman battle progress.

4)
I mentioned extreme fighting not working after the first few weeks. I've seen this in past builds, and I've never been sure if it was intentional. But after the first 2-3 weeks of fighting every 2-3 days, the boxers always seem to need rest. I had one period of 12 days where they were resting the whole time. After another period of 14 days, I fired Bull and abandoned boxing for funding.

5)
Reflex Sights seem to be broken or nerfed? They used to be game-changers, but using them now, the APs per shot don't change.

6)
I'm not sure if this is intentional, but enemies can steal your weapons and break them. Grunty had a fully decked out assault rifle at 100%. An enemy stole Grunty's gun, I got an interrupt in the same turn and killed him. When I got the gun back, it was below 50% and missing all but one of its attachments. That seems a little too much.

1) I can confirm that. If one of my guys gets killed or badly wounded during the enemies turn on ironman, I usually quickload and fast-forward to repeat the battle. As soon as the battle occurs and it takes me to the tactical screen, I get a black screen every time.
The only chance to avoid this is to quickload, go to tactical screen manually, go back to strategical screen and then fast-forward. That's my workaround so far.

3) I can confirm that.

5) I don't know if that's the problem but it was for me in the beginning. Having attached e. g. a reflex sight and a scope to your weapon, you can choose between those two and the iron sight as your aiming methods. In this case, whenever the iron sight or the scope is active, the bonuses of the reflex sight don't apply. Switching between them with "." (dot) is possibly. It took me a while to notice that you could and had to switch between them and that all the attachments don't add up to one single aiming method (anymore). Wasn't it like that in the earlier times of the game?

6) I just read somewhere in the ini-files that the chance that attachments of an enemies weapon drop with the weapon is very low. I can't remember the exact value but I guess this took effect as soon as your weapon belonged to the enemy.

Known issue. Nothing we can do about it. Just remember to press ALT again when you are back in the game.

Scope modes only apply the modifiers of the currently selected sight. This is working as intended. Anything else wouldn't make sense btw.

It may help to set ATTACHMENT_DROP_RATE = 100 but this will also affect the weapons the enemy is carrying with him not just the stolen ones.

Yeah, of course this is the only way it makes sense but in some of the earlier releases of JA 2 1.13 or at least the original JA 2 it used to be only one aiming method with the effects of all attachments accumulated, wasn't it?

Yes, I think so. You can disable scope modes by setting "USE_SCOPE_MODES = FALSE" in Ja2_Options.ini. This should restore the original behaviour.

Ok, thanks. I knew it used to be different or otherwise I would've played the last ten years without knowing it. That would've sucked.

I leave it the way you guys changed it though. It doesn't make sense any other way. Great work by the way. Keep it up!

4) Yeah. Boxing. Seriously bugged. I never liked using the boxing, went for the "mine cash price" instead but I am currently on my first run ever going Mona->Chitzena->Grumm and I was relying on that boxing money (Chit @100% pays lousy 4k). Day 1: 3 fights, day 2: 2 fights. Day 3 no fights, day 4 no fights. And this is achieved by saving and reloading between every single fight and dialogue until the game doesn't bug out. Sometimes Darren doesn't hand the money back, sometimes the kung fu guy is your second and last opponent but on reload it works. Sometimes the opponent doesn't attack me at all. I get fired at frequently for no reason I can discern. Usually Q (who I'm mostly using) will do, sometimes I bring in my IMP (squadleader, LDR 82) but even that may work but on reloading and using the exact same dialogue options will result in "I have a club to run".

I have a hunch it is leadership related as Brenda/Hans/Tony is entirely bugged too. Luckily that can be fixed with a little TNT.

I don't know how I'd do an insane ironman game without boxing. You really need that extra money in the beginning, before mining improves. Most recent games, I've been doing Drassen => Cambria for Skyrider, the airport, the two SAMs, and the stores in Cambria. Grumm early would be interesting. It might be possible on insane, since there are decent supplies in the buildings. Grumm mine isn't very defensible though.

Yeah, Grumm mine is a total bitch to defend, at least during daytime. I placed all the tripwire I got to limit enemy movement and set my mercs in 2 teams at/in the house and at that stretch of rocks in the SW. And then I got the hell on to conquering Cambria so the Queen would stop throwing her troops at Grumm. Worked so far. (and, you know, I'm only playing experienced)

A question about a couple things mention in this post. How do you select what sight to use with your scope? You can continue to box after the first three fights you win? I've always experienced being told I was done after three wins.

Press the "." (dot) key to switch between sights. Possible options are shooting from hip, iron sights, reflex sights and scope. What's available depends on the type of sights on your gun. Some scopes block iron sights for example. In this case the description box of the scope will have an icon for "blocks iron sights".

As long as there are boxers left alive you can fight again at a later day. The first three fights are more an introduction to get access to Kingpin's quest. Exe 7737 and 7738 have some new bug fixes for boxing. This should make the fights work "better" or "at all" in some cases.

This is a bit of an old thread, but it was one that I googled and it seems to be covering a similar issue. I'm playing with JA2 v1.13_7866_on_GameDir_2243, lots of stuff changed in the .INI (mostly so it isn't so masochistic) and no other mods or changes. For about 30 hours the game has played without issue. My crew took the airport then the Mine, then I realized I couldn't get paid without taking all of Drassen and decided screw that I'm not ready for the assault, so I took Chitzena in entirety. Had it for like one day when ~55 bad guys (including about 15 elites!) showed up and I fled ;) So now I've got some interim decent gear and I was just roaming around kiling patrols and planned to farm the boxing ring for cash flow too. I had already fought two matches and won, and the Kung Fu guy kicked my Martial Arts IMP toons butt (I was surprised cause she is quite a badass with like 90 STR, Martial Arts, etc. . . maybe level ~3 just wasn't enough). That was like a week ago, and now that I've gone back I get a hang (cursor changes to clock) on the application whenever I talk to Darren.

I couldn't remember for certain where I had left off with him. I do not think I agreed to a fight, but then didn't pay him and left, but I might have. I think I lost to the Kung Fu guy and left.

But now when I talk to Darren, the game becomes unresponsive (music and screen animations persist, and cursor moves but keyboard and mouse buttons are unresponsive) and as I said, cursor changes to a clock. This persists for a minute or more and I've Task Managered out of it.

Interestingly, when I hand him money first, he talks to me, says "Are you ready to try your hand in courageous battle again?" or something like that, and then when I say yes, the hang ensues again.

Any ideas on rectifying it? I kinda wanted that boxing cash and don't want to restart yet again. I have yet to ever finish playing this damn game but I must have played it several hundred hours and restarted 20 or 30 times! happy

Ha! The problem went away! I went back on a play session a day or so later and used a different toon and Darren was totally responsive and functional! Will be interesting to see if he still bugs on my Martial Arts toon (the one from before) now that He has given two bouts to my Machine Gunner high strength toon.
