Battle Brothers is in Early Access for $19.99 via Steam. A labor of love by a small, part-time team, it is a turn-based tactical game set in the pre-gunpowder era with a strategic overlay. You control a team of mercenaries (only male so far, unfortunately, hence, I suppose, the "Brothers" in the title) who run around a map killing things and getting loot and experience.
Up to 12 mercs in a fight at one time, with a variety of weapons, armor, and special abilities which are still being tweaked but are very cool. You can choose from a functionally-infinite number of procedurely-generated mercs with well-written backstories. No voices, but we can't have everything. The amount of tactical decisions to be made keeps the fights fresh.
There are some "fantasy" elements (orcs and undead, for example), but little or nothing in the way of magic. This is heads-up hack and slash, and well done at that. As a bonus, it will run on the most ancient of systems, working under XP with only 1 gig of RAM. Gfx are simple, there is no voice (plans to include some voicing later are in the works), and the music and basic sound is good.
It is pretty stable and playable at the moment, and the team is very active in development. Currently it is a little on the sketchy side as most of the overarching story is not yet in place. It provides hours of tactical battles, however, and the team has big plans for the future. Well-worth checking out if you like swords-mostly-without-sorcery and tactical battles.
