OK. I need some serious help. I've been struggling with this problem for almost 2 weeks. I have a new character created in Arulco Vacations (ala PCM+), with all new sound files. Up until a few minutes ago I thought it was a sound file format problem. The game will CTD almost every time the new character speaks, I isolated one file and started experimenting with it -- the sound file used when there's enemies but not seen. She will say it after the initial drop-off in Omerta, so it's perfect to experiment with. I tried every kind of WAV file spec mentioned in anything JA2 related, 8-bit unsigned mono PCM 11Khz, 16-bit signed mono PCM 22Khz, etc . . . and when I finally gave up and let Audacity convert it to regular (default) WAV . . . well, whaddya know? She spoke the entire line! For a quarter of a joyous second I thought I had found the answer . . . and then this:

Which indicates, to me, an animation problem . . . which I have no clue about at all.

Any help would be appreciated . . . greatly appreciated.

As you say looks like an animation issue. Not sure what's going on with the SLF side, but I'd see if you can track down that F_R_WALK.sti or see if it's corrupted. Possible quick fix could be just add another anim with the same amount of frames in it to avoid the crash, it won't look correct but will avoid the CTD hopefully. Otherwise see if you can obtain another copy of that sti and replace the one that's breaking your game.

Download this one and put it in your anims folder to see if it works.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/9u65pdp86740rii/F_R_WALK.STI otherwise it might have something to do with your SLF which may mean your install is busted.

Thanks, Hawkeye. It was worth a shot -- but it didn't work. She didn't even utter a word this time before CTD. I'll try a complete install using a clean base.

Not sure if this is related too, has there been an animation update lately?

None that I know of. At least I can't see related changes in GameDir or code on SVN.

Hi Ed,

in fact that's weird?

Extract the following file (= extracted Anims from JA2 Gold) into your main directory and see if it works then:
http://kermi.pp.fi/JA_2/Patches/Other/Anims_JA2_Gold.zip

Good luck!

Best regards; Schein...

Thank you. I've re-installed over a clean 7609, and I'm going to run through eliminating one new (modded) thing after another until I get to a place where the game doesn't crash with that character. If that doesn't work I'll try those animations. However, it doesn't seem to be female animations, per se, because Meltdown, Buzz, Grace, Beth & Buns don't crash . . . trouble is, every run through the game crashes/hangs/blacks out in a different manner and at a different time/place. Sometimes a CTD immediately, sometimes a hang halfway through a voice file, sometimes a black screen after the voice file, once the voice file kept repeating the same syllable, sometimes the game CTDs during the enemy turn . . . but I have no problems with any other character or assortment of characters . . . just this one.

OK, I found the problem -- it was the portrait. The mouth animation portion included the neck and extended below the bottom of the portrait. I cut the mouth animation down to size and no more trouble. The portrait is the "Tanya Tormens" portrait from "facepack_npc_2" . . . I don't know who made it, but it's on Kermi's site. I haven't tested the other portraits in that pack.
