Edit: I play with Strohmann's SDO plus AR mod. I didn't do any hard edit on any of the ini/external files.

A few of my save files have been corrupted. Here's what it looks like. i.imgur DOT COM /3FJAO3f.png

This happened to me once before, on the same campaign. I remember I was fighting with two different squads from two different entry points in the map. The one that got corrupted was the auto-save after turn save file.

Now it happened again. But this time it happened on multiple saves. Four to be exact.

First one: The quicksave I did after setting up a daytime ambush to take over a sector.
Second: Auto save after turn slot #1.
Third: Auto save after turn slot #2.
Fourth: Manual save after winning the battle in the strategy window.

I encountered a weird UI bug before all these things happened. I don't know if this is relevant but- I had Miguel and Thor on the same squad. I had their squad take their humvee to travel another sector. When I tried to put them "on duty" after arriving I noticed that Miguel was on a different squad even though I right click to select all of them and put them on duty on the same squad. Anyway when I tried manually selecting Miguel and changing his squad to rejoin his friends Thor was changing his squad. Really weird and annoying so I decided to save the game, restart the client, and load and this what happened.

Is there any known cause for this? Is there anyway I can prevent this on happening in the future? Fortunately I have 5 manual saves to rotate with. I can only imagine that this 30 hour run would be all lost if I was only using 1 slot (plus quicksave).

tl;dr save got corrupted, how to prevent this?

If I understand you correctly I should start a new game, then load my corrupt save while on that new game? I tried it and it didn't work.

Frankly I don't mind losing an hour of progressive. It's just one hour, not the whole run. But what I am afraid of is that not knowing that I keep saving on different slots, re-writing my previous saves with corrupt ones. It seems that there is no sign that my save is getting corrupted. I might have lost an hour of progress now.. But I can be 3 hours, or even 5 hours the next time.

If there's a way on how to prevent this(instead of fixing my save) I would really appreciate knowing it. I can't even touch my campaign of fear of corrupt saves.

Thanks for replying btw. The forum seems a little dead and it makes me sad. JA2 1.13 + many more other mods is great. I only played it for a first time a few years ago myself and it instantly when to my top 3 games of all time.

Usually corrupted saves are result of antivirus software. Try disabling antivirus or add ja2 folder to exceptions list.
Check that ja2 is not installed in Program Files or any other protected folder.
Make new instalation of clean 7609, maybe some files in your installation are corrupted.
Apply dll/registry fixes if you use windows 8+
Don't rely on quicksaves, use regular saves, enable auto saving each 4 hours.
Use most recent ja2 7609 with fixes from here

so (nearly) every time a save gets corrupted my AV tries to process JA?

It was reported many times that some types of antivirus software can corrupt JA2 save games.
I also experienced this problem with some earlier builds until I disabled AV for my ja2 folder.
Something with the way certain AV programs work.

1. I don't have any anti-virus installed on the computer I play JA2 on. But that's good to know, as I'll be playing more JA2 on a different machine when I travel.

2. Welp. My game is on \Program Files (x86)\GOG.com -- I guess I'll try moving it to a different folder.

3. If I understand correctly the current 1.13 version is 7435 and its current stable build is 7609. Is this correct? The mod I'm playing with has 1.13 already in it. According to where I downloaded it here www.mediafire DOT COM/folder/419k57yq1i4j7/Stable_Release_2014 it is indeed version 7435 but it does not say which build it is using. If it's using a different build do you think I can "patch" it with the latest 1.13? Or will it ruin everything?

4. Windows 7 masterrace here.

5. I'm using both. Like I said on my original post 4 saves were corrupted, 2 of them were autosaves in combat, 1 of them were quicksave, and 1 of them were from a manual save. That 4 corrupted saves at the same time really worried me.

Another question here: Is there a way for me to edit autosaves? In the options it says autosaves happens every 6 hours? I would like to shorten that and maybe add multiple slots for autosaves.

Then maybe you have a virus which corrupts files?

Actual stable release is 7435+update to 7609.

This link is for SDO mod, not for base mod.
See 1.13 version when game loads or in tactical press 'v'

AUTO_SAVE_EVERY_N_HOURS = 12 in ja2_options.ini

Hmm, really doubt I have a virus that only corrupts JA2 files, lol. I don't have an antivirus installed be because I had a fresh reformat recently.

The SDO mod has the stock 1.13 bundled with it already. I just followed the installed instructions.

I checked the version in game. It says 1.13.7435 build 14.08.27? I went to 1.13's mod page and it seems that 14.08.27 is the date which 7435 was released. So I'm guessing this is raw 7435 with no updates. I'm going to try to manually update my game with SDO mod to see if this works. Hopefully it will. SDO is just too good to pass up for me. I'll report and post what happens.

Update: Patched the SDO with the latest 1.13 update. Played for about 3 hours. No crash, no corrupted saves. Thanks for informing me of that update.
