Hello Omni_graphical..
I've been lurking this thread for a long time now and I've finally decided to register and post..

there are some minor improovements that could be done to the app itself.
Recently I tried to play on my cheap china-tablet via gamer mouse connected through USB-OTG adapter.
How it worked was though that in relative mode I had to grab JA2 cursor with OTG created cursor to actually move the in game pointer, while in the other mode OTG created cursor clipped over JA2 one and they travelled together(wich also broke the in-game impression, but was easier to navigate). One thing wierd though both left and right mouse buttons on my mouse provided only left mouse button clicks in-game (so things like precision targeting or mercenary sub menu were unavailable),other wierd thing was that to be able to write on the in game keyboard i had to disconnect my mouse from the tablet otherwhise in game keyboard would not pop up. could theese issues be fixed somehow i'd really like to play and even give feedback after a full playthrough but due to my (ham-fisted) nature I'm unable to properly navigate the pointer via touchscreen (even in tablet mode) not to mention right mouse clicks are a pain in the buns right now since my fingers are too thick for the interface to detect second finger touch (it thinks i'm doing some hand gestures) although I'm touching one finger next to other, the spots it marks are like two or three centimeters away that's 'round one inch.
Hope to hear frome You soon and also waiting for the 1.13 release since JA2 is definetly best android game today even better than gemRB ports since those forgotten realms games are too big to fit my tablet's internal memory (around 1,76GB of formatted space) with 1,13 support it would totally dominate in android games realm of today (or so i think)
Best Regards
Gus T.

Hi gustarballs1983,

sorry it always takes me so long to answer. I'm quite occupied with other things currently.
It is nice to see that my build is still running on newer devices at all Smile

Regarding the issues with your mouse:
I wrote this port so long ago that most available Android devices did not have a support for USB-HID host functionality at all. And sadly I still don't have access to a devices with such a feature for testing.
But maybe you can map your physical right mouse button to some function that is normally accessed by a button in Android like 'MENU' or 'SEARCH' for example. Any standard Button should do. Then you can set the right mouse inside ja2android to that specific button instead of the 2-finger touch event. That should help at least a little.
As for full mouse support I would most likely need to recode some stuff as ja2android cannot differentiate between mouse-move and touch-move events currently, so it will always expect touch-move - which will only be sent when you hold your left mouse button.

1.13 release still requires a fully SDL ported version of 1.13. I'm currently unaware of such a version, so I cannot begin porting that.

Hello Omni_graphical...

just had some time to test last night this time i used wireless keyboard+mouse combo via OTG it appears that one can map right mouse clicks to keyboard keys (in wich case i can program the previous wired mouse to use it's additional buttons as keyboard buttons and I should be all set up).
the only time i'd need to disconnect the mouse would be during imp creation and new save title, so that should be marginal.

Anyways about my so called *new* device... it's not anything extraordinary it's a low end chineese tablet for 219 PLN wich is roughly around 50 USD with android 4.0.4 wich is the baseline version of android that supports most drivers for the otg. it's like 1GHz single core, mali400 GPU and less than 512MB of ram with 1,76GB space on the internal memory card.
Mostly (in my case it was also like that) device producers do not inform that their device has otg fuctionality. To be sure something has OTG functionality check if You have a microusb port in Your device and that it has android 4.0.4 upwards, and most likely it should be fine, to make Yourself sure buy a cheap USB-OTG adapter cable and grab a usb device like keyboard/mouse/thumbdrive to check if You have otg or not. Nowadays almost evry android device should support it (at least in theory). Pre 4.0.4 like eg. android 4.0.3 and downwards it was the case of drivers that were not present in the kernel, so device could not detect them otherwise at all, but the functionality was there.. this was the case in many new devices that shipped with stock android like 2.3.6 or so and were advertised as otg... otg came to them at an system upgrade to 4.0.4 or higher..

so be sure to check before You say no:p

EDIT:

Also I'd kindly like to ask, could the new android version be savegame-compatible to PC straciatella version??
Now it is not possible to fully customize our IMP merc eg. like give him camouflage triat or the "badass" bigguy = alternative weapon aiming stance. Although one could easily switch to 1.03 and create imp (via imp editor and imper) then enter 90210 in imp site to create new merc and upgrade save to straciatella and export save to android device than play.
Hope to hear from You soon..
regards

Hey guys. I am a longtime lurker as well, and had a working version of the Straciatella working on my Galaxy. I thought the app was great but had difficulty controlling everything via touch screen without getting frustrated.

I guess I am just stopping by to show support and say job well done.

Hi gigilentini8, welcome to the pit!

Don't try to mix 1.13 with vanilla ()unless told oterwise). It seems you copied over files in /Data. Specifically, map tilesets. The old exe cannot handle new 1.13 stuff (or the other way around).

Either play normal JA2, or install 1.13 correctly, but don't try to gradually copy over files.

My cloudhoster (UbuntuONE) is shutting down, I have thus temporarily added a mirror hosted at copyCom. If you posted the download links directly on your page/other forums/videos please update those links and refer to _this_ forum topic instead until the hosting issue is resolved properly.
Any offers on a more permanent solution for the download (like a normal server download) are very much welcome.

Registered to say, this is great work. Could you please please please upload a build of the latest version with the drop all mod? It's all that's stopping me playing a proper game on my tablet. I'm running windows, and it's a nightmare setting up the dev environment. I would be hugely grateful.

Hello forum! and hello Omni_graphical!
I happened to exchange a couple of email with pelya and he is about to include an option to create an onscreen buttons in his tool where a LMB or RMB could be mapped! This should be done in next two weeks or so.
I think that would be absolutely fantastic especially for users with no hardware keys, knowing how frustrating the "second finger" can be while trying to right click Smile
In general, i think the JA2 Android project is absolutely awesome and shouldnt be forgotten!
My deepest respect to all the people involved in it.
regards
Jack

Hello there!
I've started to play this great port on my Galaxy Note 3, and after a while, I've got to the point where grenades are available. Unfortunately my device experience a crash, every time a grenade (mini or smoke) is thrown by my mercs or the enemy. It is always like this:
somebody throws a grenade, the animation is playing, grenade is dashing through the air, and lands. Then, right at the moment when you expect it to explode, there is an extremely brief "saving" message and immediate exit of application.
Did someone experienced this? I would really apprecieate a solution, because I suspect it will be hard to complete this game without throwing a single grenade, or even harder - to deal with enemies before they can throw theirs Smile

Other that that, everything works very good and stable. One minor issue is that in dynamic messages merc names (and items too, i think) only appear as a first letter, so instead of:
"Steroid repaired Ira's armor" i get:
"S repaired I's armor"

thanks for help Smile

First of all, thanks a lot for your hard work. I've got a few problems with this port, saves don't work (as in the game saves, but after restarting continue saved game is greyed out) and most voices won't play, music and sound effects all work. Other than that it runs flawlessly. I'm running it on a 2014 Dell Venue 7 under android 4.4.4. All files are lowercase. Any suggestions as to what should I do?

Try changing the data folder name to lowercase only if you've renamed all your files to be lowercase, dunno why, Data didn't work for me, but data did.

@paul: I am afraid you have to be more precise with your problem. The app should create a basepath on its first run, somewhere in either your phone memory or your sdcard. If not, then I need detailed logs.

@paul: could you please first describe what you tried so far?

You should need to:
- install APK
- run once, it will crash (that's okay)
- locate the app-data folder it created, either /sdcard/... or some other path, depending on your android version and device vendor
- copy the data files of the original jagged alliance windows version in the respective directory
- run the app again -> game should start as expected.

@paul: the patchfile is only for compiling your own APK, unless you want to do that, you don't need the file ;) Just locate that folder, it should be somewhere.

[EDIT]: now that you have found the folder, copy over the data files and you should be good to go happy

I've passed the game playing JA2@Android. I used the GOG version of the game.
Almost everything works.
What do not work are some strings cut to the first char. When a merc hears an enemy moving, instead of "Blood hears a loud sound from the north", I get "B hears a l sound from t". If the "the" would be omitted, "B hears a l sound from n" would be good enough to me.

The game originally uses 4:3 aspect ratio. Our Android devices are usually 16:9, which means, that we have the game stretched or we have black bars on the sides. It would be great to keep 4:3, push the game original view to one side and to have a screen keyboard on the other side. Multiling O (new beta) keyboard can have any size, position and layout anyone can imagine (unless there's a space button in the layout). If there's a way to force Android show the keyboard all the time and not to interfere with touching, we could use keyboard shortcuts to control the game, which would be very comfortable.

Is it possible to make JA2UB@Android? Omnigraphical, can you do it? Can I do it (and how, if so)?

I really prefer JA2UB than JA2.

Hello everybody,

I tried to run the application on my Sony Xperia Z1 compact. After Install at the beginning and before I can do the specific device settings there was an advice that there is a "broken OS" detected and the system will probably crash.
I tried the Android-OS 5.1 lollipop as custom rom and the cyanogenmod 12.1 (also lollipop).

Is there someone else who had the same problems and fixed it?

Hi Omni.
Hopefully you would be able fix the issue, which is appearing on 3 from my 4 devices. I have Nexus 5 and 7 (2013) with Android 6.0.1, HTC One (M7) with Android 5.0.2 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini with Android 4.4.2. I'm able to play your build JA2 only on S4 Mini. On other devices I get following error:

h--p://srandista.modan.sk/Mobile/JA2_1.png

The thing is, requested library is already in lib folder by default:

h--p://srandista.modan.sk/Mobile/JA2_2.png

Is it possible to find some log file, or enable some debug option, so I could give you more info about this issue?

Thanks for reply thumbs up

Some progress has been made since the revival. In the next release you can expect everything to use SDL2, which will also make the android side simpler (now it's using a custom 1.3 port). The bulk of the original patch looks redundant now, so it's mostly about adapting the input handling.

If you like what I do, consider supporting this non-profit.

OS is mismatch, application will not work.
Install update, or copy system/lib/libc.so from another device.

(translated from russian)

app-data folder was created on the main memory, rather than on SD card.
I copied Data folder to app-data/com.opensourced.ja2, but application doesn't work.
It shows start screen and crushed with message "Application was stoped".

OS version - Android 6.0.1
Device - Galaxy Tab A

May be problem is folder name? In my device SD card's folder is named "/Card", rather than "/sdcard".

Just wanted to mention it doesn't work for me on marshmallow either. Same message as others, shows up on first run:
Quote:
Broken OS detected
Your device has broken system libraries, this application will most probably crash. Please install a system update, or flash a custom ROM, or copy file /system/lib/libc.so from another device(experts only)

This message shows first time it's run, then the app just crashes on open after that.

I verified libc.so is indeed in the same location, and even tried replacing it with another libc.so. I know marshmallow handles some permissions differently, so maybe the app can't get permission to that folder?

IIRC, my previous phone was on kitkat and ja2 ran fine on that, must be a change in lollipop or marshmallow causing the error.
Hope this helps to debug. Thanks for all the hard work!

**edit**
forgot to mention, Galaxy s7, android 6.0.1 stock rooted

Hi, is the project still alive or is there an other actual way of playing JA2 on android? I've tried to run the game by following the instructions mentioned here, but i only get the same problem as mentioned above from @skitzoid.

Now that the port to sdl2 has been done, the relevant parts of the android work remain to be merged. It works already with just a basic template, but there's more work needed to make it mobile friendly.

You can track progress and help testing here: https://github.com/ja2-stracciatella/ja2-stracciatella/issues/228
