So it's one of my pet peeves with the game, it's another way the game is relentlessly tough even on lower levels. The fact that if the AI gets a crit, your mercs are losing certain attribute points, and some can be downright devastating (MD getting a headshot, losing 28 wisdom!).

Whilst it's nice that this ups the difficulty, it's more a frustration and a trigger for me to grab the last auto-save and roll until the merc gets injured in a non-critical fashion. I know that you can use doctoring to regain lost attributes, but it's an arduous process, and if its bad enough then it'll take an age.

So tl;dr, it's not a fun game mechanic for me, and is just leading me to save scum more which in turn ruins my enjoyment over the long run because you get lazy.

I checked around the INI editor, but on a quick glance I couldn't really find an option. Is there a way to disable stat losses, I fully expect to have to start a new game for it to work, but it would personally help my enjoyment much more than get frustrated when my genius mercs turn into Kaboom's dumber cousin.

But in all truth, taking a bullet in the brain would impair one a bit, don't you think?

Sorry in advance for my lack of precision, as i don't have the game files at hand, but as far as i can remember :
1 - there are options to this feature
2 - doctoring can heal those stats loss

Well, yeah. Props for realism. But I personally feel that some of the massive attribute losses really take away from the enjoyment of the game. And the game is punishingly hard enough as it is, and since Merc's are infinitely less replaceable than your random Deidranna redshirt, those losses can easily decimate a team before you even get a decent infrastructure going.

Even more so working with NCTH, where those DEX losses will turn any shooter into a wet blanket cause they're unable to even point a gun. Sure, it means that as boss you gotta replace them with more capable mercs, but I had saves where I hadn't even gotten to Drassen and most of my guys were running around with bad losses because a stray bullet lodged itself into MD hiding all the way behind the front line.

It's a balancing act, and with how JA2 is, I can do without the stat losses without it making the game easier. Injured mercs I can deal with, cycling the main combat guys in any given sector depending on the least dinged up guys. But those stat losses, they're just annoying and frustrating, and they take away fmore from the experience than they add, for me personally that is.

Again, different people and different strokes. And I get that some people like the added danger and risk of combat, but I guess I'm not a bad enough dude to kill Deidreanna. cheeky

Just change DAMAGE_NEEDED_TO_LOSE_STATS in Skills_Settings.INI to a higher value (max 100) if you don't like the default. This only affects the new trait system. In the old system the value is hard coded.

I really miss some features:

some person gets his / her legs shot off and can only be used as a teacher afterwards (oc on half pay)

Your imp smokes cigar after cigar and gets mouth cancer

Fox getting pregnant for left alone in a sector with two certain big mails too often

Haywire gets the asignment "head storeman" and everything gets messed up and begin's to rot
Buns gets the same asignment: she is brilliant, but won't store items which aren't 100% and if You want something: forms, forms ...

....
