So it's been a few years since I played JA2 so I downloaded the latest version of AIMNAS and set about liberating Arulco. I just started fighting my way through the northern part of the airport when one of my teams ran into a an armed jeep. This caught me totally flatfooted as my previous playthroughs only encountered tanks and that was around Meduna. So with a couple of mercs pinned behind rocks, Igor did a mag dump with his AK-74 and found that had no effect. Under a hail of machinegun fire, Barry decided to stand up for some reason and quickly joined the AIM memorial roll. Rifle fire ineffective, Igor began tossing frags - half of which missed (really Igor, really?) and the other did minimal damage. Buns took some shots at the jeep with the SL-8 with no effect. The only weapon that could consistently do damage to the jeep was Grace's Winchester Trapper as each shot would do 1 or 2 points of damage. After half an hour of shooting, the jeep finally blew up (if only those Iraqi insurgents realized the HUMVEE's greatest weakness was the Winchester Trapper in .44 magnum) and we could pay our respects to Barry (why did you stand up from behind the rock you big dummy?)

So how do you deal with armed jeeps? I've got no AT and intermediate calibre rifles seem to just tickle it. I'm dreading pushing further into Drassen now.

Go to San Mona and have a few beer with the irish lad there. He'll hook you up with some vintage AT gear.

If you liberated the airport, perhaps you can order some explosives from Bobby Ray?
In all honesty though, in my opinion certain settings should be disabled by default and this is definitely one of them.
I can imagine the cars,

and invasions really doing a number on new players.

Firstly you'll need to resort to guerrilla warfare, be fluid and dynamic and pick your battles. Scouting helps. Sun Tzu say, "...appear where the enemy beep-beep-jeep is not..."

Secondly, everybody gets trappers with .44 C-Mags. Even Barry. Requires XML editing.

Thirdly, go south to Balime and buy the Humvee. Load nothing but RDX, TNT, C4, C1, mines, claymores, thermobaric RPG rounds, and German MREs into it. Drive it into the enemy Humvee. Detonate.

I mean, I guess you could go talk to that Irish guy, but what does he know about tactics? Pff.

Sounds like a solid plan, but after our Humvee has been reduced to metal flakes and ash, what will we do against the other 139 enemy vehicles that we'll meet along the way? cheeky

Is progress 30 still "early game"? That's the point after which enemy jeeps can appear. Still, a player who isn't used to armored vehicles outside of Meduna will have a bad surprise at some point. big grin

Jeeps are unable to destroy most terrrain obstacles, have no improved vision range
and iirc take damage from every AP ammo like e.g. otherwise despised 7.62 tokarev,
so why waste explosives on jeeps although they may be required for tanks
(happens frequently on insane&min_item_progress to run out of AT weapons,
or have none yet when tanks appear in patrols)

This is AIMNAS. It's allowed to be hard. It's supposed to be hard. If you start your JA2 career with that, it's your own fault.

Smeag has preplaced combat cars in all the sectors that are likely to warrant having them, regardless of progress. In exchange, Devin sells decent amounts of Bazookas and Panzerfausts from day one however.

Thanks all. I guess a side trip to San Mona is in order.

Also a unrelated follow-up question - I've just seized Drassen Mine and the ACA office located there and in the past I could start training up militia. However this time it's telling me 'insufficient resources' or something like that. Now I've only cleared sectors B13, C13, and D13 - do I need to clear the entire town before I can start training militia?

If you enabled MILITIA_REQUIRE_RESOURCES in JA2_Options.ini then militia training will require certain resources. More information can be found in the Ini description or here.
