I have been playing both the original English version as well as the German one, and I have realized that German voice acting is overall much better. The voices really seem to fit the characters and there are even funnier stuff compared to the original and the accents are hilariously well-made. Really, congratulations to the team who did that at that time!

What do you guys think, which voice acting do you think is better? Besides German, are there other localisations which also have voice acting and how are they compared to the English version?

Well, I don't know if I would ever select Meltdown if she didn't have her hilarious German voice set. ROFL

All in all I'm very satisfied with the German voice acting in this game. A lot of the games get good German voice acting because German speaking countries are a large market. Sometimes however the companies don't care and I prefer the English version instead.

Russian localisation is very good, though some mercs use the same actor voice because of low budget probably, for example Igor and Grizzly. There are even two Russian localisations that slightly differ.
I never heard of other Ja2 voice localisations, do they exist?

1st: The voice of a merc may be her/his most important aspect for me,
as after all the yearss i have reason to believe that even the crappiest merc can be transformed into a battlemonster,
that is if his personality/voiceset motivates me enough to put the required effort into the campaign.

I am native german speaker, and played the german version 1st, for ~ 1+y or so?
That may create a bias towards that version (ymmv), but I really prefer the english voices.
Mostly as some of the german voice acting is too far off for me, particularly Razor and Cougar,
(a sacrilegue to replace Shawns voice with that high pitched something ;)
while some german voices are certainly on par with the english ones.

Additionally german localisations in general tend to have more restrictions regarding foul language, violence etc,
so a usually play english versions.
Last not least german terms are often quite long, so translations may break the limits of txt message windows/cells,
requiring workaround like smaller fonts etc.

Btw doesnt the original german version require a patch to show xploding heads etc?

Having played the German version when it came out in '99 I can tell you that exploding heads were in the game. But it was a point of discussion back then, I think my original box even has a "FSK 18" label because of the violence. However, I don't think foul language was ever censored in any German version of games that I know, the US is way more restrictive with their *bleeping* of expletives.

I've played the German version for the longest time, until I discovered that JA2 was available on Steam (but only in English). I snagged that version quickly because I was afraid of the old CD some day not working anymore and I need my JA2 at least once a year.

In direct comparison, the English version is better, because the accents are overall more fitting, a German hillbilly slang is not the same as a southern hillbilly slang, same goes for the German characters. But nonetheless the German voice acting was brilliantly done, and I usually try to avoid German versions like the plague. Some characters are even better in the German version, like Trevor for example.

Would be nice to play in German again I guess, but is that even possible with 1.13 and the Steam version being in English?

Actually I am currently playing an English version (GoG version) of the game in German. Text is in English but th voices are in German. I just copied the German voice files from an older German version I think.

If you don't have an older German version lying around somewhere, then maybe you could download a German version of 1.13. I think the old stable build has a German version. I am not sure though. More experienced guys here would know it better.

The language specific versions of 1.13 only have a few audio files so you need the base game in German. You can run any language version of 1.13 on top of it so you may get a mix of 1.13 texts and German audio.
