Due to the rapid demise of my current PC, I'm in the process of moving to Windows 10. I have JA2 (v8626) on a laptop and have found that if I alt/tab out, I can't get back in. I tried with v8534 (or was it 8438?), anyway, an earlier version will alt/tab out and back in. JA2 is on the taskbar but selecting that just launches a new version (while the original game load remains running...but inaccessible).

Any idea why this might be the case?

I also get a lot of flickering (thanks to the wallpaper changing - but I' discovered the 'fix' (transparency) so I'll give that a go.

No doubt I'll have more questions when I move to my new PC.

(I've added the win 10 registry fix to make the game work at a normal speed (not snail pace!))

JA2 doesn't like Alt+Tab. Avoid it like the devil avoids the incense. Better make a save, exit game, find what you need and restart the game. And the minimized JA2 in the taskbar, best way to shut it down is the Task Manager.

About the reg fix....i used the Wined3d version 1.1.38. If the Win 8 fix that is included in the 1.13 folders doesn't work, find the 1.1.38 online, download it, extract somewhere and use the same 3 dll's that come with the 1.13. Just older version, the game runs better than ever.

Thanks. I will avoid alt + tab. It worked fine with my old dead XP system but being forced into W10 is a big learning curve.

Currently the game works well - other than a stray crash and the alt+tab 'feature' that I know to avoid.
--------
I've discovered a program called Autohotkey can be used to effectively disable alt/tab. I will try this in the next few days and see if it can block accidental uses of alt/tab (and maybe the WIN key) to prevent me dropping out of the game and being unable to get back in.

I'll report back soon.

I'm now using autohotkey to disable alt+tab and the left-window key. This stops me inadvertently shunting the game back to the desktop without having a way back.

I did also disable right-window key but when quitting the game it hangs with a black screen, needing ctrl-alt-del to kill the process (which is not responding). Removing the R-Win disable stops this happening but I'm curious why this might happen.

Another thing I've noticed recently which might be coincidence...I usually activated cheats (for convenience) and often had many crashes or serious graphic glitches. I've recently put cheats on only when needed and deactivated them once I've done what I need. The crashes/glitches seem to have to stopped. It needs more hours of testing but again, does having cheats activated constantly cause anyone else any issues?

According to the Bear Pit's techs, cheats can cause crashes. I use them too sometimes, usually so i can keep a soldier alive, when an enemy soldier empties half a magazine on him/her, or a freaking LAW to the head. big grin. All i get is a crash but very sparingly and that is to be expected, cheats or no cheats. I have been using the dll's i've mentioned above and the game runs fantastically. Very enjoyable. happy
