I eventually found Hamous and hired him as usual. Except that, unlike my other mercs, his name tag in the tactical screen is yellow instead of white, and his portrait has some "Oreo-like" overlay icon on it I don't know what it means.

What does all that mean?

Some of the locals start as disguised spies as enemy thinks they are civilians, so they can act like spies until uncovered.

Sorry, you lost me. suprised
What do you mean, that I can use Hamous as a spy as long as he's yellow with an Oreo™ on his portrait?

If that's true it's ingenious, but also highlights a problem with the game I'm slowly discovering - It has become increasingly impossible to play for somebody who hasn't spent the last years following all discussions on this board (plus Discord, plus probably some other place). There are too many undocumented features and things-you-need-to-know-but-nobody-will-tell-you. You spend most of your game time scratching your head and wondering what happened or how you do something you know/guess is possible.
As illustrated by the number of "Please help!" posts I've posted those last weeks, despite being a JA2 and JA2-1.13 veteran...

As with any other complex game, you need to read documentation.
Reading this forum section will give you information on like 90% of features added in last years without the need to bother people on Discord or somewhere else.
Also searching the forum using keywords helps.

True, but finding valid and up-to-date JA2-1.13 documentation has become longer and way harder than the game itself. cheeky

Reading this forum section
I actually do, but it takes a lot of time and I'm not yet retired, so I read up as I try out the features in the game... For instance, I haven't yet read a single thing about diseases, as I prefer to not yet explore this option right now.
It's not really "documentation" either, as the information there is often outdated and/or incomplete, many pictures are long gone, links are broken, some forum posts are empty (!) and so on. Last but not least there are sometimes different threads about the same thing, and you have to compare dates to guess which post supersedes which. One has to really do detective work to gather all the useful bit which are still true.

Case in point: The tidbit about NPCs being automatically spies was in a thread I hadn't yet read, because I hadn't yet tried to explore Covert Ops so far. The "hat" (which I called an Oreo™) icon might had been a giveaway, if only I knew what it meant... Which I didn't, because there is no documentation about all those icons. It's a very steep and unforgiving learning curve.

Don't get me wrong, you guys do an amazing job, but that's at the same time a problem. Complexity rises and JA2-1.13 is slowly becoming harder and harder to apprehend. Last time I was here (around 2007-2008 IIRC), there was still the JA2-1.13 Wiki full of in-depth information, and all the documentation PDFs in the game were up-to-date. Today I have to sift through the thousands of posts of the last 10 years to assemble a coherent image of how it might work nowadays, and for every information I read, I have to ask "is this still true?".

Its obviously possible to play 8796 like my old 3356, using the same strategies, but it would be really a pity if those nifty new features get ignored just because people don't know how to use them.
